GM Outperforms Tesla and Ford in 2024 Stock Performance

Wall Street cites cash flow and shareholder returns as key drivers; UBS raises price target to $97.

DETROIT — General Motors (GM) has emerged as the top-performing auto stock among U.S.-listed carmakers in 2025, significantly outstripping rivals like Tesla and Ford. As of December 29, GM’s share price has surged over 55% year-to-date, crossing the $80 mark. This marks the company’s strongest annual performance since emerging from bankruptcy protection in 2009, surpassing last year’s 48.3% gain.

Strong Fundamentals and Shareholder Value
The rally has been fueled by GM’s robust cash generation, resilient earnings, and an aggressive shareholder return policy centered on stock buybacks. For years, GM leadership has argued the stock was undervalued despite consistent financial performance.

In a recent earnings call, CEO Mary Barra emphasized that "superior vehicles, innovative technology, and a differentiated customer experience" have allowed GM to stand out in an increasingly competitive landscape.

The numbers tell a clear story of dominance. While GM skyrocketed by 55%, Tesla managed only a 17% increase, and Ford rose 34%. Meanwhile, Stellantis saw a 15% decline, and international competitors like Toyota and Honda saw limited gains.

Analyst Optimism and Policy Tailwinds
Wall Street’s confidence is backed by GM’s track record; the company has beaten adjusted EPS estimates in nearly every quarter for the past five years. Analysts from UBS recently raised their 12-month price target by 14% to $97, naming GM their "top pick" for 2026. Morgan Stanley also upgraded the stock to "Overweight" with a $90 target.

Beyond internal execution, the external regulatory environment is shifting in GM’s favor. Under the current administration, the easing of fuel economy and emission standards has provided a significant buffer for profit margins.

"GM is effectively a North American-centric powerhouse," noted Joseph Spak, an analyst at UBS. "In a U.S. environment where emissions regulations are being relaxed, GM is positioned to be the primary beneficiary."

Future Outlook
The company’s strategy remains focused on capital discipline. CFO Paul Jacobson reiterated at a recent investor conference that as long as the stock remains undervalued in the eyes of the board, share buybacks will remain the top priority.

While the average analyst price target compiled by FactSet sits at $80.86, the recent momentum and upward revisions from major banks suggest that GM enters 2026 with significant tailwinds, driven by its traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) profitability and a pragmatic approach to the slowing EV market.
