Yemeni Government Forces and Houthi Clashes Intensify: Aden Airport and Major Saudi Cities Targeted

The military conflict between the Yemeni government forces and the Iran-aligned Houthi rebels has flared up once again. According to Reuters on the 7th (local time), following an airstrike on the southern port city of Aden's international facility, a series of aerial attacks have been launched targeting major cities in Saudi Arabia.

The Yemeni Ministry of Transportation announced early that morning that Houthi rebels carried out a ballistic missile and suicide drone attack targeting the Aden International Airport.

According to the ministry, one missile landed near the runway just before a passenger flight from Cairo was scheduled to land. Authorities promptly canceled the landing and diverted the aircraft to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Two other aircraft waiting on the tarmac were urgently relocated to prevent potential damage.

The Aden Airport serves as a vital international gateway located within the Yemeni government-controlled territory.

Meanwhile, the Saudi-led coalition announced its successful air defense operations within its airspace.

The coalition reported that it intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by Houthi rebels in the skies north of the Saudi capital, Riyadh. Officials stated plans to track down and strike the launch site located in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen.

Additionally, the coalition confirmed the interception of another missile heading toward Khamis Mushait in southwestern Saudi Arabia.

Yahya Saree, the military spokesperson for the Houthis, claimed in a statement that a drone squadron had launched an attack targeting the King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.

He also stated that Abha International Airport and the Khamis Mushait air base were attacked using missiles and drones, though Saudi authorities have not officially confirmed whether these airports sustained any direct hits.

This renewed exchange of fire was triggered when Yemeni government forces, backed by airstrikes from the Saudi-led coalition, launched a counteroffensive to recapture the Bab el-Mandeb strait and the Mokha area along the strategic Red Sea coast.

The Yemeni government previously announced that it had successfully reclaimed territories lost to the rebels last month through this ongoing military operation.
