SEOUL — In an unprecedented move, Seoul’s historic heart is preparing to come to a standstill for the return of the global pop icons, BTS. The Royal Palaces and Tombs Center announced on February 28 that Gyeongbokgung Palace will exceptionally close its gates on Saturday, March 21, to accommodate the massive crowds expected for the group’s "BTS Heritage" comeback concert.
A Historic Return at the Heart of Seoul
BTS is set to release their highly anticipated fifth studio album, ARIRANG, on March 20, marking their first full-group release in three years and nine months following the completion of all members' military service. To celebrate, the septet will hold a live performance at Gwanghwamun Square on the evening of March 21.
The event, titled "BTS THE COMEBACK LIVE | ARIRANG," will be broadcast live to over 190 countries via Netflix. This marks a milestone for the streaming giant as its first-ever live music event produced in South Korea for a global audience.
Unprecedented Safety and Logistics
With police estimating a staggering crowd of up to 260,000 people, authorities are prioritizing public safety over regular tourism:
Palace Closure: Gyeongbokgung, which usually closes on Tuesdays, will shut down on this specific Saturday.
Museums & Arts Centers: The National Museum of Korean Contemporary History will also close, while the National Palace Museum of Korea is currently reviewing a similar move.
Performance Adjustments: The nearby Sejong Center for the Performing Arts has already begun canceling or rescheduling planned musicals, plays, and ballets to avoid logistical conflicts and ensure the safety of the massive influx of fans (ARMY).
Symbolism of 'Arirang'
The choice of Gwanghwamun Square is deeply symbolic. The album title Arirang refers to the quintessential Korean folk song, reflecting the group’s journey and roots. Sources suggest the performance may feature the members passing through the historic Woldae (elevated ceremonial stage) and the three arched gates of Gwanghwamun, blending Korea’s traditional majesty with modern pop culture.
Following the Gwanghwamun showcase, BTS will embark on a massive world tour spanning 34 regions and 82 shows, signaling the start of a new era for the "Princes of Pop."
