The confirmation of the Paraguayan national football team's qualification for the 2026 World Cup has sparked a nationwide celebratory atmosphere and a positive economic boost. In particular, the pub and bar industry has enjoyed a record-breaking boom as crowds gathered to watch the matches together.

The Paraguayan Bar Association (Asobares) announced that the day of the match against Ecuador on September 4 was the highest-grossing day of the year. Augusto Insfrán, the president of Asobares, said, "There were huge crowds not only on the day of the match but also before and after. Sales have increased significantly since the national team started to gain momentum." He added, "This sales increase has had a positive impact not only on bars but also on related industries, such as food and beverage suppliers."

Sales Surge by 100% After World Cup Qualification Confirmed

Jorge Martínez, the vice president of Asobares, described the match as a 'historic day' for the pub and bar industry. Martínez emphasized, "Most establishments were at full capacity, and sales increased by a staggering 100%." This sudden surge in demand also had a positive effect on the job market, as temporary employment was increased to cope. Although it was a rainy day with bad weather, it could not dampen the passionate cheers of the football fans.

Meanwhile, the Paraguayan national team's success has revitalized not only the pub and bar industry but also various other service sectors, including the restaurant and entertainment industries. Many Paraguayan citizens headed to bars and restaurants throughout the city center to celebrate the World Cup qualification. This economic ripple effect is expected to continue. President Insfrán stated that the entire industry is excited, anticipating that the upcoming World Cup finals will provide another business opportunity.

A Disappointing Holiday Boost

However, sales were sluggish on September 5, the public holiday the day after the match. Vice President Martínez explained, "Visitors decreased on Friday because they had already spent a lot of money on Thursday." Nevertheless, he added, "This match was a historic event, and I am very satisfied that the people could celebrate and enjoy it."

The people of Paraguay are enthusiastically welcoming the Albirroja (a nickname for the Paraguayan national team) as they step onto the World Cup stage for the first time in 12 years. The passion for sports is proving to be a significant driving force for economic recovery. The Paraguayan pub and bar industry hopes that this World Cup qualification will lead to sustained sales growth, beyond just a temporary boost.
