Beyond Antibodies: Global CDMO Giants Expand into Next-Gen Modalities and High-Value Processes

The global Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) industry is undergoing a paradigm shift, moving past basic production capacity expansion into high-value processes and next-generation modalities. Major industry players like Lonza, WuXi AppTec, and Samsung Biologics are aggressively ramping up strategic investments to capture surging markets such as peptides, spray-dried dispersions, and cell and gene therapies (CGTs).

Lonza recently announced plans to construct a large-scale commercial spray-dried dispersion (SDD) facility in Bend, Oregon, slated for completion by 2029. This facility will support small molecules, biologics, and messenger RNA (mRNA), addressing the expanding market demand for advanced drug delivery technologies that enhance bioavailability. Similarly, WuXi AppTec has installed a commercial spray-drying unit at its Swiss facility, targeting full operation. These moves highlight how traditional sectors like small-molecule manufacturing are being revitalized through complex derivatives and high-potency active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).

Strategic integration is also reshaping the competitive landscape. According to Deloitte, CDMOs are rapidly transitioning from simple suppliers to strategic partners, curating high-margin service portfolios to maximize profitability. Pharmaceutical companies increasingly collaborate with CDMOs from early-stage development through commercial manufacturing for complex, hard-to-develop molecules such as Antibody-Drug Conjugates (ADCs), antibody-oligonucleotide conjugates (AOCs), and complex peptides.

Samsung Biologics is accelerating its global footprint with a massive 13 trillion won investment plan through 2034 to widen the gap with competitors. A cornerstone of this strategy is the construction of its Songdo Campus 3, backed by a 7 trillion won budget spanning 2027 to 2034, which will specialize in next-generation modalities including peptides, small antibodies, and CGTs. Furthermore, Samsung is making a landmark entry into the fast-growing peptide CDMO market—spurred by soaring global demand for advanced anti-obesity therapeutics—by acquiring Switzerland’s PolyPeptide Group for approximately 2.7 trillion won. This strategic M&A immediately grants Samsung advanced manufacturing infrastructure, proprietary peptide technologies, specialized talent, and pre-existing client contracts.

By aligning early-stage Contract Development (CDO) leadership with large-scale commercial production for complex molecular structures, top-tier CDMOs are successfully locking in clients early in the drug development lifecycle. As new market entrants crowd the conventional monoclonal antibody space, industry experts emphasize that future growth will depend heavily on how quickly companies can establish end-to-end technical and manufacturing capabilities in high-value, emerging therapeutic classes.
