Buc-ee's Set to Open First North Carolina Location, Bringing Texas-Sized Travel Center Experience to Mebane

Mebane, North Carolina – Buc-ee's, the Texas-based travel center chain with a near-cult following, is making its highly anticipated debut in North Carolina. The company's first Tar Heel State outpost is slated for Mebane, a strategic location poised to serve travelers on a major interstate corridor.

What is Buc-ee's?

Established in 1982 by Arch "Beaver" Aplin III in Texas, Buc-ee's has grown into a phenomenon renowned for its exceptionally clean restrooms, vast array of food options, and colossal store footprints. The company's unique name is a fusion of Aplin's childhood nickname, "Beaver," and his Labrador Retriever, Buck. The iconic beaver mascot draws inspiration from the 1950s cartoon character, "Bucky Beaver."

Buc-ee's offers an unparalleled travel stop experience, often described as a "destination in itself." Beyond the clean facilities and extensive fuel pumps, customers are drawn to the sheer variety of merchandise, including quirky souvenirs, outdoor gear, and branded apparel. The company's commitment to customer service and high-quality offerings has fostered a loyal fan base, making each new store opening a significant event.

North Carolina Store Details

The new Buc-ee's in Mebane is projected to be an impressive 75,000 square feet, featuring a staggering 120 fueling stations and over 600 parking spaces. The chosen site is strategically located at 1425 Trollingwood-Hawfields Road, near the convergence of Interstates 85 and 40. Anticipating significant traffic, Buc-ee's has committed between $6 million and $11 million to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) for required improvements to Trollingwood-Hawfields Road, as reported by Southern Living.

Opening Timeline and Strategic Location

The Mebane Buc-ee's is expected to open its doors in late 2026 or early 2027. Its location is particularly advantageous for those traversing the state or visiting the region's prominent educational institutions. Mebane is approximately 200 miles east of Asheville, a roughly three-hour drive, according to Google Maps. More locally, the new Buc-ee's will be a convenient stop for families dropping off or picking up students, situated about 25 minutes from UNC Chapel Hill, under 25 minutes from Duke University, and approximately 45 minutes from North Carolina State University, making it a key waypoint for the Research Triangle area.

Hallmarks of the Buc-ee's Experience

Buc-ee's locations are characterized by their extensive fuel pump arrays, typically ranging from 80 to 120. Inside, patrons can indulge in a diverse selection of food and beverages, including famous Texas barbecue, artisanal fudge, kolaches, the signature Beaver Nuggets (sweet corn puff snacks), various jerky options, and fresh pastries. A cornerstone of the Buc-ee's brand is its reputation for having the "cleanest restrooms in America," a claim officially recognized in the 2012 Cintas' America's Best Restroom Contest.

Economic Impact and Local Considerations

The arrival of a Buc-ee's store can significantly impact local economies. The massive travel centers generate substantial sales tax revenue for host communities, stimulate local development, and create numerous job opportunities.
