Consular officials are receiving instructions on how to more stringently and consistently screen out visa applicants who are deemed statistically or financially likely to rely on U.S. public welfare benefits after arriving in the country. While the administration emphasizes that these rigorous measures are necessary to safeguard national resources and public funds, the State Department has not yet disclosed a definitive timeline for how long the training will last or when normal appointment scheduling will resume.
