GIMPO, SOUTH KOREA – Residents of Gimpo may soon benefit from an expansion of Seoul's innovative 'Hangang Bus' water transportation system, with potential service commencement as early as 2027. The Gimpo City government announced today the formation of a dedicated Task Force (TF) to spearhead the integration of the Hangang Bus network into the city's transportation infrastructure.
The newly established TF, comprising representatives from the Future Strategy Division and various key departments including transportation, roads, and urban planning, will focus on the swift acquisition of necessary administrative approvals. These include river occupancy permits and the seamless integration of the water bus service with existing public transportation options.
A primary focus of the TF's efforts will be enhancing accessibility to the designated pier location, which is currently under consideration as the Hangang Floodgate Control Office at the Gimpo Terminal of the Gyeongin Ara Waterway. The city has committed an estimated 730 million KRW (approximately $540,000 USD) to construct a new parking facility near the floodgate by the end of next year and to improve the alignment of the access road leading to it. This investment aims to ensure convenient access for potential Hangang Bus passengers.
Furthermore, to bolster connectivity via public transit, Gimpo City is planning to introduce a new bus route that will directly link the well-utilized Gimpo Goldline subway at Gochon Station with the Hangang Bus pier. This strategic connection will provide a convenient transfer option for commuters and residents across the city.
The city has been diligently assessing the operational feasibility and long-term viability of the water transportation system, having allocated 290 million KRW (approximately $215,000 USD) last year for a comprehensive basic plan study. This proactive approach underscores Gimpo's commitment to ensuring a sustainable and efficient integration of the Hangang Bus service.
Seoul's Hangang Bus, which will initially operate with a fleet of 12 vessels, is set to launch official services within the first half of this year, connecting seven key piers along the Han River: Magok, Mangwon, Yeouido, Apgujeong, Oksu, Ttukseom, and Jamsil. As of this announcement, six of these piers are fully operational, with the remaining Oksu pier expected to be completed this month. The successful establishment of Seoul's network provides a solid foundation for its expansion to neighboring Gimpo.
A spokesperson for Gimpo City stated, "We are actively collaborating with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to ensure a smooth and efficient integration of the Hangang Bus service. With the anticipated completion of necessary construction by next year, we are optimistic that Gimpo residents will be able to utilize this convenient water transportation option in the near future."
The potential introduction of the Hangang Bus to Gimpo signifies a significant step towards diversifying transportation options in the region and enhancing connectivity between Gimpo and Seoul. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to utilize the Han River as a vital transportation artery, offering a potentially faster and more scenic alternative to traditional road-based travel, particularly for commuters traveling to and from western Seoul. The development will be closely watched by residents and transportation planners alike as it progresses towards its anticipated launch.
