Gyeongsangbuk-do, one of South Korea's key regional administrative bodies, has officially embarked on a massive strategic initiative to nurture 20,000 core regional professionals who will lead the future industries of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk (Daegyeong) region, specifically focusing on Artificial Intelligence (AI), future aviation, and biotechnology.

On September 15, the province hosted the "Gyeongbuk Strategic Industry Anchor University Vision Proclamation Ceremony" at Yeungnam University. The high-profile event brought together major figures including Hwang Myung-seok, Vice Governor for Administration of Gyeongsangbuk-do, along with the presidents of five prominent regional universities—Yeungnam University, Gyeongwoon University, Daegu Catholic University, Daegu University, and Gyeongil University—as well as key executives from local corporate partners.

Bridging Regional Innovation and Industrial Demands

This strategic program is designed to transform regional universities from traditional educational institutions into active hubs of local innovation. By establishing practical talent cultivation frameworks, cutting-edge technology R&D pipelines, and vibrant startup ecosystems, the initiative aims to connect global-level educational and industry-academia cooperation capabilities directly with the local economy. This creates a sustainable growth model that counteracts regional brain drain and revitalizes the local job market.

Following the opening remarks and joint vision declaration by the five anchor universities, Professor Lee Won-jae from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) delivered a comprehensive keynote lecture addressing the future trajectory and cooperative synergy of the Gyeongbuk Anchor University Alliance.

Detailed Roles and Strategic Goals of the Five Anchor Universities

To achieve the monumental goal of producing 20,000 skilled professionals over a span of four years with a total investment of 60 billion South Korean won, the five participating universities have divided responsibilities based on their specialized strengths and regional industrial alignments:

Yeungnam University – Spearheading the AI and ICT Ecosystem Yeungnam University has taken up the mantle of becoming the "Gyeongbuk AI+X Hub University." Its primary mission is to cultivate approximately 4,000 specialized AI+X talents. To build a robust infrastructure for research and field-testing, the university is anchoring a triangular belt connecting Yeongcheon (specializing in mobility), Gyeongsan (specializing in Information and Communications Technology, ICT), and Uiseong (specializing in bio-industries). This network will serve as the backbone for regional AI integration across traditional manufacturing and service sectors.
Gyeongwoon University – Pioneering Future Aviation and Aerospace Gyeongwoon University is tasked with driving the future aviation sector. By establishing a comprehensive cooperation network involving local governments, industries, academic institutions, research facilities, and military defense organizations (G-I-A-R-M cooperation framework), the university aims to train roughly 6,000 professionals tailored to the rapidly expanding aerospace, drone, and advanced mobility markets.
Daegu Catholic University, Daegu University, and Gyeongil University – Expanding Bio Convergence A consortium of three universities—Daegu Catholic University, Daegu University, and Gyeongil University—will jointly operate the "K-BIC Bio Convergence Major". Through this collaborative educational framework, they plan to educate and nurture around 10,000 bio-industry specialists. This concerted effort is expected to accelerate the region's competitiveness in pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and green biotechnology.

A Shared Commitment to a Virtuous Cycle of Talent Retention

During the event, Vice Governor Hwang Myung-seok emphasized the evolving mission of higher education in the modern technological landscape. He stated, "In the era of Artificial Intelligence, it is vital for universities to foster practical capabilities that directly match the urgent demands of corporate and industrial sites. Gyeongsangbuk-do will work hand-in-hand with our five anchor universities and local enterprises to ensure that young talents can learn, find meaningful employment, and grow right here in our region."

This initiative represents a critical milestone in regional policy, shifting away from fragmented educational support toward a unified, cluster-based strategy. By aligning academic curricula with real-world corporate requirements, Gyeongsangbuk-do aims to construct a permanent, self-sustaining virtuous cycle where educated youth choose to stay, work, and build their futures within the local community, thereby securing long-term economic vitality for the entire Daegu-Gyeongbuk region.
