Seoul, South Korea—In a landmark moment for Korean popular music, Trot has achieved official academic recognition. Song Ga-in's signature song, "Gaineera," has been formally included in a newly published middle school music textbook, marking the first time the genre has been officially listed in a domestic educational curriculum.

A New Chapter for Korean Music Education

The song's inclusion in the "Music 2" textbook (published by Pakyoungsa) is seen as a pivotal step in redefining the historical and cultural status of Trot. This move integrates the genre—long considered a staple of Korean popular music—into mainstream public education, allowing students across the nation to study its unique characteristics and vocal techniques.

The textbook's curriculum includes specific learning activities designed to engage students with the nuances of Trot performance. For instance, the content instructs students to: "While listening to 'Gaineera,' mark the vibrato, pitch bends (꺾는 음), crescendo, and decrescendo on the score, and try singing and presenting the song while capturing the unique ornamentations (Sikimsae) of Trot." This practical approach encourages a deep appreciation for the technical demands and emotional depth of the genre.

The Significance of Song Ga-in's Legacy

The official recognition carries profound meaning, largely due to Song Ga-in's background and consistent dedication to traditional Trot. The artist, who majored in Pansori (Korean traditional operatic singing), successfully bridged the gap between traditional Korean music and modern popular music. Her role in igniting the contemporary "golden era" of Trot, beginning with her victory on the TV CHOSUN program Miss Trot, solidified her position as a leading figure capable of embodying the most "Korean form" of the genre.

A representative from her agency, JG Star Entertainment, emphasized the importance of this recognition, stating that the inclusion validates Song Ga-in's unwavering commitment to the authentic, traditional form of Trot. The singer herself has previously remarked on the close relationship between Pansori and traditional Trot, calling them "inseparable," and affirming her intention to "continue to pursue traditional Trot."

The textbook's decision reflects a broader societal movement to re-evaluate and celebrate Trot, a genre that has firmly established itself at the heart of Korean popular music. Its formal incorporation into the educational system is considered a decisive result of these cultural shifts finally reaching the public school curriculum.
