Northwest Missouri State University announced in a statement last Friday afternoon that the U.S. federal government had revoked the legal stay status of 43 international students associated with the university. University President Dr. Lance Tatum explained that 5 of these students are currently enrolled, while the remaining 38 are "Optional Practical Training (OPT) students" who are staying in the U.S. for visa-related employment after graduation.

President Tatum stated, "This situation continues to evolve, and Northwest's International Involvement Center is working to provide direct guidance to the affected students." However, he added, "We are advising students to depart the United States immediately to avoid any penalties associated with being out of status."

According to university spokesperson Mark Hornickel, the university began to recognize the revocation of stay status last week as international students received notifications or as staff members checked the federal Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).

As of Friday afternoon, the specific reasons for the revocation of the Northwest Missouri State University students' stay status were not immediately clear. However, it is known that this occurred amid a series of similar student visa-related cases nationwide under the Donald Trump administration.

According to a report by 'Inside Higher Ed', a higher education news outlet, over 800 international students and graduates from more than 150 universities have had their legal stay status changed by the federal government in recent weeks as of Friday. The outlet's database reported two visa change cases at Park University in the Kansas City area, and similar cases have reportedly occurred at the University of Missouri, although the exact number is unknown.
