While the technical data and hull dimensions recorded by the sonar align perfectly with the blueprints of the French submarine, researchers remain cautious. The discovery has ignited a debate over the management of wartime shipwrecks. Under the 2001 UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage, the site is protected from looting and unauthorized intervention.
