TRAVERSE CITY, MI – An shocking incident occurred on July 26, 2025 (local time) when a man in his 40s went on a stabbing rampage at a Walmart supermarket in Traverse City, Michigan, injuring 11 people. The suspect was subdued by citizens at the scene and turned over to the police. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances of the event.

Indiscriminate Attack and Scene of Carnage

Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea identified the suspect as a 42-year-old Michigan resident but did not release his specific identity. Shea added that authorities believe the suspect acted alone. The incident took place near the supermarket checkout counters, and the suspect is reported to have used a common folding knife.

Eyewitness Julia Martel testified, “I heard screams and saw a man with a knife pushing and stabbing people.” She described the horrific scene by adding, “There was blood everywhere.” The suspect appeared to attack victims at random, not targeting anyone specifically. It has been confirmed that no Walmart employees were among the injured.

11 Injured, 6 in Critical Condition

A total of 11 people were injured in the incident and have been transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. According to Munson Healthcare, a northern Michigan hospital system, six of the injured are in critical condition, and five have serious injuries. The local community has been left in a state of shock and sadness.

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents have been dispatched to the scene to assist local police with the investigation. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer released a statement, saying, “My deepest condolences go out to the victims and community affected by this brutal act of violence,” and “I am grateful to the citizens who responded quickly to subdue the suspect.” Walmart spokesperson Joe Pennington also stated that “violence is not tolerated” and expressed gratitude to the citizens who apprehended the suspect.

This incident has once again raised awareness about the ongoing issue of indiscriminate violent crimes in American society. Additional facts are expected to be revealed as the investigation into the motive and background of the incident proceeds.
