Seoul, South Korea – In a bid to bolster consumer sentiment and revive a struggling economy, the South Korean government has unveiled an unprecedented stimulus package that includes substantial tax cuts and accelerated public spending.

The move comes as the nation grapples with a series of challenges, including political uncertainty and the recent Jeju Air plane crash, which have dampened consumer confidence and exacerbated economic woes.

By providing significant tax incentives, the government aims to stimulate domestic consumption and corporate investment, reigniting economic growth.

A 18 Trillion Won Boost

According to the Ministry of Economy and Finance's 2025 Economic Policy, the government will mobilize 18 trillion won in public funds to swiftly support the struggling economy. Key measures include:

Automotive Industry Support:A 30% reduction in individual consumption tax on vehicles, capped at 1 million won, will be implemented in the first half of the year. This translates to a maximum tax benefit of 700,000 won for a 40 million won mid-sized SUV.
To encourage the replacement of older vehicles, the government will offer a 70% reduction in individual consumption tax, capped at 1 million won.
Electric vehicle subsidies will be made available immediately at the beginning of the year, and additional incentives will be provided for corporate discounts.
Home Appliance Rebates:To ease the financial burden on low-income households, the government will increase rebates for purchasing high-efficiency appliances from 20% to 30%.
Multi-child, newborn, and large families will also receive higher rebates, increasing from 10% to 15%.
Credit Card Incentives:Individuals who increase their credit card spending by 5% or more compared to the previous year will be eligible for an additional 20% income tax deduction, capped at 1 million won.
Domestic Tourism Promotion:The government will distribute 1 million new accommodation vouchers for non-metropolitan areas and expand the vacation support program for employees of small and medium-sized enterprises from 65,000 to 150,000 beneficiaries.

A Comprehensive Approach

These measures, combined with other initiatives, are designed to address various aspects of the economy. By incentivizing consumption of durable goods, supporting the electric vehicle industry, and promoting domestic tourism, the government aims to create a virtuous cycle of economic growth.
