With less than a month left until Easter, egg prices in some supermarkets remain at exorbitantly high levels without apparent justification. In response, the Senate plans to summon officials from Sedeco (Consumer Protection Secretariat).

Senate President Basilio Núñez suggested that they should stop mutual recriminations and fighting, forget the past, and focus on issues that are important to citizens.

"We will summon Sedeco on Monday to investigate the reasons for the relentless rise in prices of essential goods such as eggs and milk," Núñez announced at a press conference on Thursday.

When asked what solutions Sedeco could offer in a situation where the laws of free supply and demand apply, making price regulation impossible, Núñez replied that at least controls should be implemented to verify whether there is justification for the high prices, or whether they are simply inflated due to the approach of Easter.

"I believe this is excessive, and it is an abuse to victimize the powerless. Capuchones and other groups should step up and work to lower prices through dialogue, not coercion," he opined.

Despite a 25% reduction in egg production at the beginning of the year due to high temperatures, the current supply of eggs is sufficient to meet demand.

Néstor Sarsa, president of Avipar, stated that the current prices, ranging from 30,000 to 43,000 guaraníes, will be maintained until Easter, meaning there will be no further increases beyond this already elevated ceiling.
