The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) is generating excitement with the grand opening of "Cosmic Journeys: Celebrating Philippines and Italy in Space," a special event commemorating the remarkable achievements in space science and technology applications and the flourishing partnership between the two nations.

Co-organized by PhilSA, the Embassy of Italy in the Philippines, and the University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED), the 1  opening ceremony is scheduled to take place on April 23, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the UP NISMED Auditorium. Following the opening, a telescope viewing session will be held at the NISMED Observatory until 9:00 PM.

To grace this momentous occasion, the organizers have announced the attendance of distinguished guests, including His Excellency Davide Giglio, the Ambassador of Italy to the Philippines; Dr. Edgardo Carlo L. Vistan II, the Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Diliman; and Dr. Joel Joseph S. Marciano Jr., the Director-General of the Philippine Space Agency.

The "Cosmic Journeys" event will also feature two special exhibitions open to the public from April 24 to May 2, 2025 (excluding weekends and holidays), from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM:

"From Moon to Mars: Italy in Space Exploration" Exhibition (UP NISMED Auditorium)
"#YamangKalawakan: The Philippine Space Ecosystem" Exhibition (UP NISMED Ground Floor Lobby)
This collaborative endeavor aims to foster a shared curiosity about the cosmos and highlight the contributions of both the Philippines and Italy to space exploration. The organizers warmly encourage everyone eager to explore the fascinating world of space science to participate actively in the event.

Philippines-Italy: A History and Future of Space Collaboration

The Philippines and Italy share a history of consistent collaboration in science and technology, with the potential for cooperation in the space sector being particularly promising. Italy, a key member of the European Space Agency (ESA), has been involved in numerous space exploration projects, playing a leading role in diverse fields such as satellite technology, spacecraft development, and astronomical research. The Philippines, having recently established PhilSA, is also actively strengthening its indigenous space development capabilities and aspires to contribute to the advancement of space science in the Southeast Asian region.

The "Cosmic Journeys" event is poised to commemorate these mutual efforts and serve as a crucial platform for exploring future collaborative opportunities. Notably, the exhibitions are expected to introduce the history and technological prowess of Italian space exploration to the Filipino public and showcase the current state and potential of Philippine space development to the international community.

Exhibition Details

The "From Moon to Mars: Italy in Space Exploration" exhibition will showcase Italy's involvement in major space exploration projects, highlighting its innovative technologies and achievements in areas such as lunar exploration, planetary missions, and the development of space telescopes. Visitors can anticipate gaining a comprehensive overview of Italy's space exploration history and future vision.

The "#YamangKalawakan: The Philippine Space Ecosystem" exhibition will present the various space development programs and research activities being undertaken by PhilSA since its inception. Through displays on the Philippines' satellite development status, space science research, and applications of space technology, attendees will have the opportunity to appreciate the nation's space development capabilities and future growth potential. The theme "#YamangKalawakan," which translates to "Space Heritage," aims to inspire the dreams and passion of the Filipino people for space.

Ancillary Events: Opening Ceremony and Telescope Viewing

The opening ceremony on April 23rd at 5:00 PM will feature addresses by key dignitaries from both countries, who will reflect on the significance of the event and underscore the importance of Philippines-Italy space cooperation. Following the ceremony, the telescope viewing session at the UP NISMED Observatory will offer attendees a unique opportunity to observe celestial bodies firsthand, fostering interest in space and highlighting the importance of science education.

Expected Impact and Significance

The "Cosmic Journeys" event is expected to not only strengthen the friendly relations between the Philippines and Italy but also play a vital role in further enhancing collaboration in the field of space science and technology. Furthermore, it aims to raise public awareness about space science in the Philippines, inspire the younger generation, and contribute to the development of talent in science and technology. It is also anticipated to significantly promote the activities of PhilSA and showcase the Philippines' space development capabilities both domestically and internationally.

Through this event, both nations are expected to lay the groundwork for mutual cooperation in space exploration and technology development, potentially expanding collaboration to other areas such as education and research. "Cosmic Journeys" transcends a simple exhibition; it stands as a significant milestone commemorating the luminous journey of Philippines-Italy space cooperation and presenting a shared vision for a brighter future.
