South Korea's E-commerce Giants Engage in Fierce Speed Delivery War

Seoul, South Korea – The race for faster delivery speeds in South Korea has intensified as major e-commerce players and retailers vie for consumer attention. Companies are now offering not only same-day and overnight delivery but also quick commerce services, utilizing motorcycles to deliver products within an hour.

Pioneered by Coupang's "Rocket Delivery" service, the trend of rapid delivery has caught on among other e-commerce and logistics companies. Coupang's "Rocket Fresh" service, for example, guarantees delivery by 8 PM on the same day for orders placed before 10 AM. Orders placed after 10 AM are delivered the following morning.

Retail Giants Join the Fray

Shinsegae Group, which operates Gmarket, Auction, and SSG.com, has joined the speed delivery race. Through a strategic partnership with CJ Logistics, Gmarket launched "Star Delivery" in late September, promising next-day delivery for orders placed before 8 PM on weekdays. CJ Logistics is also preparing to launch a seven-day-a-week delivery service called "O-NE" early next year.

Tech Giants Enter the Arena

Ne이버, a major e-commerce player in South Korea, plans to launch its AI shopping app, "Naver Plus Store," in the first half of next year. The app will offer various delivery options, including same-day, next-day, overnight, and on-demand delivery through quick commerce. Naver also plans to offer instant delivery for products from convenience stores, local supermarkets, and Smart Stores.

Electronics Giants Join the Race

Even electronics giants are getting in on the act. Samsung Electronics has introduced its "Today Guaranteed" service in the Seoul metropolitan area, allowing customers to purchase and receive appliances, including TVs, refrigerators, and washing machines, on the same day. Customers who place an order before noon can have their products delivered and installed for a fee.

Lotte Hi-Mart has been offering a similar "Today Installation" service since June, covering TVs, refrigerators, and kimchi refrigerators. Due to strong customer demand, the company plans to expand the service to include washing machines, dryers, and clothing care appliances.

Quick Commerce on the Rise

The quick commerce market, which utilizes motorcycles to deliver products within an hour, is also experiencing rapid growth. Baemin, a popular food delivery app, has partnered with over 70 urban distribution centers to offer instant grocery delivery services. GS Retail has also strengthened its quick commerce business through its "Our Neighborhood GS" app, offering same-day delivery from over 15,000 GS25 convenience stores and 500 GS The Fresh supermarkets.

The intense competition for faster delivery times is reshaping the retail landscape in South Korea, as companies strive to meet consumer demand for convenience and speed.
