
Seoul, South Korea – Samsung Heavy Industries announced today that it has received approval in principle (AIP) for a groundbreaking new design of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier equipped with wing sails. These innovative sails harness wind power to provide auxiliary propulsion, reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
The approval was granted by both Korea Register and the Liberian Registry, certifying that the design meets the required safety and environmental standards. The LNG carrier will feature a forward-positioned wheelhouse, addressing a common challenge in wind-assisted vessels by improving visibility.
In addition to the wing sails, Samsung Heavy Industries has developed a proprietary air resistance reduction system called Saver Wind. This system, when combined with the wing sails, is expected to significantly reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions by harnessing wind power and minimizing wind resistance.
"Wind power is a limitless and clean energy source that can play a crucial role in achieving carbon neutrality in the shipbuilding industry," said Jang Hae-gi, head of Samsung Heavy Industries' Technology Development Division. "We will continue to focus on developing products and technologies that utilize wind power."
The global wind propulsion technology market is projected to reach 3.5 trillion won by 2050, according to the UK Department for Transport's Clean Maritime Plan. Samsung Heavy Industries aims to expand the application of wind propulsion technology to other types of vessels, such as ammonia and carbon dioxide carriers.
By adopting these innovative technologies, Samsung Heavy Industries is positioning itself as a leader in the development of sustainable and environmentally friendly shipping solutions.
