Budget-Friendly Boom: China Emerges as Top Value Destination for South Korean Travelers

A significant shift is underway in South Korea's outbound travel market, with China rapidly emerging as a top-tier, budget-friendly destination, rivaling—and in some ways surpassing—the traditional appeal of Southeast Asia. New research indicates that for South Koreans, the overall cost of a trip to China is now notably lower than the average expense for a Southeast Asian vacation, positioning the nation as a strong "value-for-money" travel alternative.

Shifting Sands in South Korean Travel Preferences

According to an August survey on travel trends and plans by the consumer research firm Consumer Insight, Japan remains the most-visited foreign destination, holding a 29% share of outbound travel. However, its dominance is waning, with its share dropping 5 percentage points from the previous month. Conversely, China is gaining momentum. While it currently ranks third in market share at 9%—behind Vietnam (14%)—China saw a 3 percentage point increase in August and a 2 percentage point rise since the start of the year. This recovery places China ahead of Thailand (7%) and closing in on Vietnam, signaling a major trend reversal.

The interest in visiting China is also soaring. The number of South Koreans who expressed a desire to visit China reached 12% by August of this year, a 3 percentage point jump year-on-year. This figure is double the low of 6% recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Analysts suggest that if this trajectory continues, Chinese tourism could soon return to its pre-pandemic peak of 14% observed in 2019.

Affordability is the New Attraction

A primary factor driving China's surging popularity is its compelling cost-effectiveness. Industry experts point to several key drivers:

Temporary Visa Waiver: The temporary visa-free entry for South Korean nationals, implemented in November of last year, significantly eased travel.
Expanded Connectivity: The expansion of flight routes and the introduction of new package tour products by travel agencies have improved accessibility.
Stable Currency: The relative stability of the Chinese Yuan provides travelers with a predictable and high "utility-to-cost" ratio, cementing China’s reputation as a value destination.
The numbers strongly support this economic appeal. The average expenditure for South Koreans traveling abroad this year was an estimated 1,054,000 Korean Won for a trip to China. This figure is over 200,000 KRW cheaper than the Southeast Asian average (1,274,000 KRW). In fact, a trip to China was even more affordable than those to neighboring Japan (1,068,000 KRW) and Vietnam (1,117,000 KRW).

China's Unique Appeal to Package Tourists

Consumer Insight highlights that China's diverse attractions—including vast cultural heritage, spectacular natural landscapes, and unique culinary traditions—make it an especially attractive destination for package tours. The data shows a distinct difference in travel style compared to Japan, with the ratio of individual travel to package travel for China currently sitting at an even 50:50 split.

This trend presents a clear opportunity for the travel industry. As more South Koreans seek value and comprehensive, all-in-one experiences, travel agencies are being urged to innovate and develop differentiated package products that capitalize on China's multi-faceted appeal and growing affordability. The data suggests that for the cost-conscious Korean traveler, China is now undeniably the most competitive option in the region.
