Singapore – On May 31, a major outage occurred at global data center company Equinix's SG1 data center in Singapore, causing two data halls to go offline. The disruption, which lasted for over an hour, led to widespread service issues across Singapore, significantly impacting major local telecommunications providers and Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

Power Supply Interruption Due to Equipment Failure During Maintenance

Equinix stated regarding the incident, "During routine maintenance at the SG1 data center, which required reducing power redundancy, an equipment failure led to a power supply interruption in two data halls within the data center." Equinix categorized the incident as "minor and localized," adding that "the issue has been resolved."

The affected SG1 data center, located at 20 Ayer Rajah Crescent, is a large facility boasting 13MW of capacity and over 9,290 square meters (100,000 square feet) of space. This facility serves as a critical infrastructure for numerous businesses and services, functioning as Singapore's digital hub.

Major Singaporean Telcos and Internet Services Paralyzed

The Equinix SG1 data center outage directly impacted major Internet Service Providers in Singapore. Services for several ISPs, including Singtel, Singapore's largest telecommunications company, as well as StarHub and ViewQwest, were disrupted or delayed.

ViewQwest stated, "This incident is entirely unrelated to previous service issues," emphasizing that it "occurred due to an external infrastructure failure beyond our direct control." ViewQwest added that it would work with Equinix to identify the root cause of the incident.

Given Singapore's status as a major data hub in the Asia-Pacific region, this incident serves as a renewed reminder of the critical importance of data center infrastructure stability. Singapore actively attracts global data centers based on its excellent connectivity, stable power supply, and strong government support policies. However, when problems occur with such large-scale infrastructure, the ripple effect can extend to the national economy and citizens' daily lives.

Recurring Equinix Singapore Data Center Outages

This is not the first outage at Equinix's Singapore operations. In October 2023, a major outage occurred at the SG3 data center due to issues with the cooling system, leading to unprecedented disruptions for various services, including banking apps, WhatsApp, and Call of Duty. At that time, Equinix focused on resolving the technical issues, and the incident had widespread effects on financial services and daily communication.

The successive outages at Equinix data centers highlight potential vulnerabilities in data center operations and maintenance processes. In modern society, data centers function as critical national digital infrastructure, beyond mere physical spaces. With the advancement of cutting-edge technologies like cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things, the role of data centers is becoming even more crucial, and accordingly, their stability and resilience are emphasized more than ever.

Importance of Enhancing Data Center Stability and Resilience
The SG1 data center outage demonstrates that businesses must prioritize stability and disaster recovery systems when selecting data center service providers. Equipment failures during routine maintenance can lead to unpredictable incidents, resulting in service disruptions and substantial economic losses.

Data center operators must provide stable services by:

Strengthening power redundancy systems.
Regularly inspecting cooling systems and establishing backup systems.
Implementing network equipment multi-redundancy.
Conducting staff training and developing emergency response plans.
Furthermore, continuous investment should be made to proactively identify and minimize potential risks.

Especially in cases like this incident, where problems occur during maintenance, which are within a predictable range, even more thorough preparation and preventive measures are required. Emergency response plans should be formulated considering all scenarios that could occur during maintenance, and training should be repeated to ensure swift and efficient action in real-world situations.

The Singaporean government should take this incident as an opportunity to more closely review the stability of data center infrastructure and strengthen regulations and guidelines to prevent similar incidents from recurring. Data center stability is directly linked to the national economy's digital transformation, so systematic management and investment should be made from a long-term perspective.

The Equinix SG1 data center outage will be recorded as an event that once again underscores the importance of data centers and the high level of stability and professionalism required in their operation. It is time for both businesses and governments to recognize the importance of data center infrastructure and build a stable digital environment through continuous investment, preparing for unpredictable risks.
