Thinnest-Ever Foldable Smartphone Imminent: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 to Measure Just 6.1mm

SEOUL — Samsung Electronics is poised to push the boundaries of hardware innovation yet again with the upcoming launch of the Galaxy Z Flip8, slated to be the thinnest foldable smartphone in industry history. According to smartphone industry sources on July 13, the highly anticipated clamshell device boasts a profile measuring just 6.1mm when fully unfolded. This milestone achievement brings the foldable form factor remarkably close to standard bar-type smartphones, representing an extraordinary engineering feat given the inherent structural challenges of foldable mechanisms.

According to comprehensive industry data, Samsung will officially unveil the Galaxy Z Flip8 at its upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event on July 22, hosted in London, United Kingdom. The device marks a substantial physical refinement over its predecessor, reducing its unfolded thickness from 6.5mm to 6.1mm, and its completely folded thickness down to 13.2mm. Alongside the reduced profile, the device’s weight has dropped from 188 grams to 180 grams, significantly enhancing portability and ergonomic comfort for everyday users.

However, industry insiders clarify that the headline-grabbing 6.1mm measurement reflects the display panel itself, excluding the protective raised bezel surrounding the screen. When accounting for this protective rim, the practical operational thickness stands at approximately 6.6mm. While this adds a slight margin, it still represents a tangible 0.3mm reduction compared to the Galaxy Z Flip7's effective thickness of 6.9mm.

Historically, minimizing the thickness of foldable devices has remained a notoriously difficult obstacle due to the multi-layered display stack and the dual-axis hinge mechanisms required to pivot two distinct halves. To accomplish this breakdown, Samsung has extensively overhauled its proprietary hinge assembly. The newly engineered architecture allows the two folding panels to press tightly together with virtually zero gap, while simultaneously adjusting the bending radius of the flexible display. This reconfigured bend mechanism substantially alleviates the mechanical stress applied directly to the folding area, allowing the integration of an ultra-thin glass (UTG) layer that effectively mitigates the long-standing industry critique of highly visible screen creases.

This aggressive architectural downsizing has effectively normalized the thickness disparity between foldables and standard flagship devices. For context, Apple's ultra-thin "iPhone Air" measures 5.6mm, while the Galaxy S25 Edge stands at 5.8mm. By shrinking the Galaxy Z Flip8 down to a 6.1mm baseline, Samsung has narrowed the historical divide to a razor-thin margin of roughly 1mm, establishing foldables as genuine aesthetic competitors to mainstream premium smartphones.

While the exterior architecture introduces profound refinements, the internal hardware specifications largely mirror the previous generation. The Galaxy Z Flip8 retains a 4,300mAh battery capacity, identical to the Flip7. The camera configuration also carries over the standard arrangement established since the Galaxy Z Flip6: a 50-megapixel primary wide-angle lens paired with a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor on the rear, alongside a 10-megapixel front-facing selfie camera embedded within the internal display.

The primary internal diversion lies in the Application Processor (AP) deployment strategy. Unlike the Galaxy Z Flip7, which utilized Samsung's in-house Exynos 2500 globally, the Z Flip8 will reintroduce a regional bifurcation model. Domestic Korean and European variants are slated to ship equipped with the new Exynos 2600 chipset, whereas models bound for the United States, Japan, and other select global markets will be powered by Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor.

Market entry pricing is projected to increase, with the 256GB base model expected to retail at €1,299 and the 512GB tier at €1,499—representing a respective premium hike of €100 and €180 over last year's models. Market analysts attribute this pricing surge to the global constraints surrounding memory semiconductor supply chains, driven heavily by skyrocketing enterprise demand for Artificial Intelligence (AI) server infrastructure, which has universally driven up component procurement costs for consumer mobile hardware.

Crucially, whispers within supply chains indicate that the Galaxy Z Flip8 could mark the conclusion of Samsung's traditional clamshell roadmap. With the tech giant set to debut a wider, passport-style form factor via the Galaxy Z Fold8 at the same event, speculations are mounting that this newer design could eventually absorb the role of compact foldables. While technical schematics for next-generation products are traditionally distributed to manufacturing partners months in advance, supply chain audits confirm that no preliminary data or design framework regarding a prospective 'Galaxy Z Flip9' has yet been circulated, reinforcing the theory of a strategic shift.

The July 22 Galaxy Unpacked event is shaping up to be one of Samsung's most comprehensive showcases to date. Beyond the Z Flip8, the company is prepared to unveil a trio of foldables including the Galaxy Z Fold8 and the premium Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. These mobile devices will be accompanied by the next generation of wearables—the Galaxy Watch9 and Watch Ultra2. Additionally, intense industry attention is fixed on whether Samsung will provide an initial public preview of its debut smart glasses, provisionally dubbed 'Galaxy Glass'. Pre-orders for the newly announced foldable lineup are scheduled to commence immediately on the day of the Unpacked event, with official retail availability expected to roll out globally in early August.
