Where Tradition Meets the West: Seoul Hanok Hosts Fusion Opera and Court Dance

SEOUL — Seoul's historic Samcheong-dong neighborhood recently served as the backdrop for a cross-cultural showcase, bridging Joseon-era court dance, Western classical opera, and contemporary art inside a centuries-old traditional Korean house (hanok).

Organized by the SK Podo Museum, the two-day "Sunhyewon Art Project 2.5" concluded its run at the Sunhyewon cultural space last month. Originally launched as a contemporary art exhibition series last year, the project broadened its cultural footprint this current year to encompass live performing arts and educational masterclasses.

The festivities kicked off with a performance of "Chunaengmu" (Spring Nightingale Dance), a classic Joseon court dance restaged by creative director Jung Gu-ho. The night continued with arias from Verdi’s La Traviata delivered by an elite lineup of international opera stars: soprano Park Hye-sang, mezzo-soprano Kim Hyo-na, tenor René Barbera, and baritone Lucas Meachem, renowned for their performances at major global venues such as the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

To bridge cultural divides visually, the vocalists wore modern-infused hanbok tailored by Director Jung to reflect the opera’s characters. The atmospheric hanok, framed by exposed timber beams and rafters, also housed Web, an installation piece by Palestinian contemporary artist Mona Hatoum, creating a multi-layered aesthetic dialogue between East and West, ancient and modern.

Education took center stage on the second day as baritone Lucas Meachem led a public masterclass for four promising young vocalists representing prominent local institutions, including the Korea National University of Arts and Seoul National University.

Refining the students' technical skills over a two-and-a-half-hour session, Meachem emphasized vocal projection and emotional connection. "The core of opera is projection," Meachem told the students and the audience of roughly 100 attendees. "Don't just listen to how your voice sounds to yourself; sing with the intention of delivering every note and lyric right to the back row." An intimate gala performance featuring the four guest vocalists followed the masterclass.

The invitation-only event welcomed about 100 pre-registered guests free of charge.

Reflecting on the vision behind the initiative, Podo Museum General Director Kim Hee-young explained that the project aims to champion Korean artists operating on the global stage while cultivating cross-cultural mentorship. "We hope Sunhyewon continues to grow as a dynamic cultural bridge connecting diverse people and artistic traditions from around the world," Kim said.
