Resident Doctor Dies Due to Inhumane Pressure… Head of Trauma Surgery Training Department Dismissed Following Released Chat

The inhumane working conditions within a hospital, hidden behind the tragic death of a young doctor, are surfacing and causing widespread repercussions. In Asunción, Paraguay, Marcelo Barrios (26), a resident doctor at the Hospital de Trauma, recently passed away in an unforeseen accident. Following this, his colleagues have released successive statements exposing the grueling work schedules and unfair pressure they endure.

Through a joint statement, the fellow doctors asserted, "Marcelo did not die due to simple carelessness but lost his life due to extreme overwork." According to their claims, Mr. Barrios had been on duty for 35 consecutive hours before his death. It is presumed that on the day of the accident, he suffered the mishap while driving due to fatigue from overwork.

Supporting these claims, the colleagues released KakaoTalk chat logs vividly illustrating the suffering of the resident doctors. The disclosed conversations contained circumstances indicating inhumane pressure from the head of the hospital's training department, Dr. Carlos Román, who instructed residents to prepare for presentation immediately upon returning from leave. The messages, even demanding presentation preparation right after returning from sick leave, starkly reveal the extreme stress and pressure faced by the medical staff.

At the center of the controversy, Dr. Carlos Román had been serving as the head of the trauma surgery training department until the incident. As he was identified as the sender of the disclosed KakaoTalk messages, facing তীব্র public criticism, the hospital quickly dismissed Dr. Román from his position. Hospital director Juan Fernández Baldivinos stated in an interview with a local radio station, "I spoke with Dr. Román, and we agreed that he would voluntarily resign, taking responsibility for the current situation." The hospital director also added that Dr. Román was also "suffering" due to this incident.

This event has once again brought to the surface the chronic issues of poor working conditions and staff shortages within the Paraguayan medical community. Concerns are being raised that long working hours and excessive work stress can pose a serious threat not only to the health of medical professionals but also to patient safety. In particular, resident doctors often face excessive workloads under the guise of education and training while pursuing their specializations, leading to persistent calls for systemic improvements.

Both domestic and international medical communities are increasingly calling for improvements in the working conditions of medical staff, including residents, in light of this incident. Burnout among medical professionals can lead to a decline in the quality of medical services and medical errors, which can ultimately cause serious harm to patients, making this an issue that cannot be overlooked.

The Paraguayan health authorities must thoroughly investigate the truth of this incident and take fundamental measures to prevent recurrence. This could include limiting the working hours of resident doctors, ensuring sufficient rest, increasing staffing levels, and establishing institutional mechanisms to protect medical professionals from unfair pressure. Efforts to reform the hierarchical culture and inhumane work practices within medical institutions should also be pursued in parallel.

It is hoped that the tragic death of the young doctor will not be in vain and that this incident will serve as an opportunity for the Paraguayan medical community to achieve fundamental change. Only when medical professionals can care for patients in a safe and healthy environment can high-quality medical services be provided.
