In a significant leap for commercial aviation, Boom Supersonic has successfully completed the first supersonic test flight of its experimental passenger aircraft, the XB-1. This groundbreaking achievement marks the return of supersonic commercial flight for the first time since the retirement of the Concorde in 2003.
On [date], the XB-1 prototype reached Mach 1.1 three times during a 30-minute test flight over the Mojave Desert. Pilot Tristan "Zepetto" Brandenburg guided the aircraft to a peak altitude of 35,000 feet and a speed of Mach 1.122 just 12 minutes into the flight.
This latest success builds upon 12 previous test flights, with the XB-1 gradually increasing its speed and altitude. The company's ultimate goal is to develop the Overture, a commercial supersonic airliner capable of carrying 64 to 80 passengers at Mach 1.7. American Airlines, United Airlines, and Japan Airlines have already placed orders for a combined 130 Overtures.
The XB-1's success is a major milestone for the aviation industry, signaling a potential new era of high-speed commercial air travel. The Overture is expected to enter commercial service in 2029, drastically reducing flight times between major cities.
