Chungnam Province has expanded the international exchange foundation for the upcoming Chungnam Museum of Art—scheduled to open next year—by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the National Gallery Singapore, following previous partnerships with domestic public art museums and overseas cultural and arts institutions.
The province announced on the 12th that Chungnam Province and the National Gallery Singapore recently signed an MOU to promote mutual cooperation and expand international exchanges.
The agreement was conducted in a non-face-to-face manner, with Kim Jang-eun, Head of the Chungnam Museum of Art Preparation Division, and Eugene Tan, Director of the National Gallery Singapore, digitally signing the documents online.
Opened in 2015, the National Gallery Singapore is a premier national art institution in Singapore, housing the world's largest public collection focused on modern art from Singapore and Southeast Asia.
In particular, the museum broadens the understanding of regional art and maintains international exchanges through exhibitions and research that highlight Singaporean and Southeast Asian art within the context of world art history.
Through this agreement, the province aims to establish a cooperative framework between the upcoming Chungnam Museum of Art and the National Gallery Singapore, expanding exchanges across various fields, including exhibitions, education, and curatorial research.
Under the agreement, the two institutions plan to discover areas of mutual interest over the next five years and gradually promote sector-specific exchanges and cooperation in exhibitions, research, and education through working-level consultations.
The province first plans to pursue academic exchanges linked with international forums, discuss concrete cooperative projects such as joint research and exhibitions, and expand these into continuous exchanges following the opening of the Chungnam Museum of Art.
Kim Jang-eun, Head of the Chungnam Museum of Art Preparation Division, stated, "The Chungnam Museum of Art aspires to be an open public art museum connected to the world based on regional cultural assets. Through this MOU, we will share the expertise and experience of both institutions and enhance cultural and arts exchanges between Korea and Singapore."
Director Eugene Tan remarked, "Through this agreement, we expect to vitalize research and academic exchanges regarding Southeast Asian art and Chungnam regional art, and to deepen mutual understanding of each other's art and culture."
Meanwhile, the Chungnam Museum of Art is currently under construction with the goal of opening in the second half of next year. Having completed the above-ground structural framing, subsequent processes such as interior wall construction are currently underway.
Alongside preparing for the opening of the Chungnam Museum of Art, the province plans to strengthen its capabilities as a public art museum communicating with the world by expanding cooperation with domestic and international public art museums and cultural and arts institutions.
