Putin Vows Resilience as Russia Faces “Difficult Period” Amid Escalating Drone Strikes

MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged on June 28, 2026, that the nation is navigating a "difficult period" as it grapples with the intensifying consequences of the ongoing war in Ukraine. During an address at a congress of the ruling United Russia party, Putin emphasized that Russia’s survival as a sovereign power hinges on its strength and independence.

A Nation Under Pressure

"We are going through a difficult period, but this has taught us a great deal, and allowed us to grasp the very essence of what it means to be a Russian citizen," Putin stated. He characterized the current landscape as one of "unprecedented pressure" from Western elites, whom he accused of attempting to orchestrate a strategic defeat of Russia by inciting internal instability and unrest.

The President’s remarks follow a surge in long-range Ukrainian drone strikes targeting Russian energy infrastructure and military industrial facilities. On the weekend of June 28, reports emerged of a massive drone assault that ignited a major oil refinery in the Krasnodar region and reportedly struck another facility in Yaroslavl, leading to civilian casualties. These attacks are part of a broader campaign by Kyiv to diminish Moscow’s financial ability to sustain its invasion, now entering its fifth year.

Economic and Logistical Challenges

The impact of these strikes has become increasingly visible. Recent reports indicate that the campaign has choked fuel supplies across several Russian regions. In response, regional authorities in places like the Irkutsk region have been forced to restrict gasoline sales to civilians due to supply disruptions.

President Putin, while maintaining a facade of stability, presided over a meeting with key cabinet ministers—including those from the defense, industrial, and energy sectors—to discuss domestic fuel stability. He directed officials to "adjust" plans where necessary to protect civilian infrastructure and ensure the security of the country’s borders. "We will undoubtedly overcome all the challenges facing us today, including terrorist attacks on our territory and infrastructure facilities," Putin asserted.

Escalating Tensions

The conflict has shifted toward a more direct confrontation behind front lines, with Ukraine accelerating its strike campaign to isolate Russian-occupied territories, including Crimea. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has framed these operations as "long-range sanctions," noting that each successful strike reduces the resources available to the Russian "war machine".

As the war drags on, analysts note that the continuous bombardment of oil refineries and logistics hubs is imposing significant pressure on the Kremlin to reconsider its battlefield strategy. Meanwhile, Putin continues to emphasize national unity, claiming that those who seek to weaken Russia’s resolve will never succeed. Despite the rhetoric, the escalating fuel shortages and the frequency of strikes suggest that the "difficult period" described by the Russian leadership is likely to persist as the conflict enters a volatile new phase.
