Samsung and LG Accelerate 'African Localization' to Pioneer the New Frontier

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are sharply intensifying their localization strategies across Africa, positioning the continent as their next major "land of opportunity." This strategic pivot is widely viewed as a proactive effort to solidify influence in emerging markets while countering aggressive low-price expansion by Chinese competitors in traditional markets like North America and Europe.

Rather than relying on generic global rollout models, both companies are tailoring their execution: Samsung is focusing on rapid commercial network expansion and direct consumer touchpoints, while LG is building a medium-to-long-term "national brand" presence by placing local talent in direct operational control.

Samsung Expands Retail Footprint and Financial Infrastructure

Samsung Electronics officially launched an exclusive Samsung Brand Store in Kenya in partnership with local home appliance retailer Housewives Paradise. Operated directly by Housewives Paradise, the store marks the beginning of a broader retail rollout across Kenya, stocking Samsung’s entire lineup of TVs, home appliances, and mobile devices integrated with local mobile payment infrastructure.

In parallel, Samsung launched an innovative mobile financial initiative in partnership with Sierra Leone (a subsidiary of the pan-African banking group Ecobank) and Africell (a major UK-based telecom operator in the region). Under this structure, consumers purchasing Samsung smartphones through Africell can access installment payment options facilitated by Sierra Leone, significantly lowering the financial entry barrier for high-end smartphones.

Beyond consumer electronics, Samsung is deepening institutional ties. The company recently supplied state-of-the-art interactive digital screens to Great Lakes University of Kisumu (GLUK) in Kenya, replacing traditional chalkboards and fostering long-term educational collaboration.

LG Bets on Local Talent and Organizational Empowerment

LG Electronics is similarly deepening its African footprint, placing human capital at the core of its growth engine. In a recent corporate video detailing its regional strategy, LG highlighted its Nigerian business unit as a flagship milestone for localization.

Jung Phil-won, Head of LG Electronics Middle East & Africa (MEA) Region, emphasized:

"The true competitiveness of a global enterprise lies in true localization. At the center of that transformation is always its people. Rather than relying on expatriates for short-term gains, our Nigerian subsidiary made a bold decision to delegate real operational authority entirely to local talent. Our local team now drives the business with true ownership, delivering tailored innovations optimized for the local community."
To support this shift, Samsung's regional workforce in the Middle East and Africa reached 5,277 employees at the end of last year—an 18.3% increase year-over-year. Meanwhile, LG Electronics recorded 15.9 trillion KRW (approx. $11.6B) in revenue from Asia and Africa last year, accounting for 18% of its global total and officially surpassing its European market revenue (15%).

Market Dynamics: Premium Tech vs. Cost Competitors

Africa represents a vast untapped market due to historically low home appliance penetration. However, government-led rural electrification projects in countries like Kenya and Nigeria are driving explosive demand for essential appliances, including refrigerators and cooling fans.

According to market research firm Mordor Intelligence, the MEA home appliance market is forecasted to expand from $25.51 billion in 2026 to $34.5 billion by 2031, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.2%.

The market has evolved into an intense competitive arena among South Korean, Chinese, and regional players. Chinese brands such as Hisense and Haier are aggressively scaling up, alongside Turkish brand Beko in the mid-to-low segment. U.S.-based Whirlpool, which once held a strong position in South Africa, exited the continent in 2024 as part of a strategic consolidation toward Europe.

Mordor Intelligence noted that while the market remains concentrated among top players, Samsung and LG maintain a firm leadership position in the premium tier by leveraging proprietary innovations—such as in-refrigerator cameras and seamless IoT integration via SmartThings and ThinQ platforms.
