When Power Met the Press: How the Washington Post Survived Trump, and Why Its Lessons Still Echo

In the tense landscape of modern media, few clashes between political power and journalistic integrity match the drama detailed in Martin Baron’s gripping memoir, Collision Power: Media, Democracy, and the Trump Presidency (Korean edition published as How Politics Threatens the News). Serving as the executive editor of The Washington Post from 2013 to 2021, Baron chronicles a turbulent era defined by high-stakes investigative reporting, intense political pressure, and a fundamental battle for the soul of American journalism.

A Secret Dinner and the Pressure Cooker

The friction between the White House and the press reached a fever pitch on June 15, 2017. Inside a private White House dining room, then-U.S. President Donald Trump unloaded his grievances directly upon Jeff Bezos, the billionaire founder of Amazon who had acquired The Post in 2013.

Unbeknownst to the room at the time, The Post was simultaneously dropping a bombshell scoop detailing ties between Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and Russian figures. By the next morning, Trump was demanding that Bezos ensure fairer coverage of his administration, marking the beginning of a relentless campaign of intimidation.

"To the president and his inner circle, the basic duty of the press was precisely what categorized us as the opposition," Baron writes.

Economic Coercion and the Cost of Independence

Trump’s tactics went far beyond public name-calling. Branding the independent press as the "enemy of the people," his administration leveraged state power to target Bezos’s business empire. From pressuring the U.S. Postal Service to hike shipping rates for Amazon to sabotaging a lucrative Pentagon cloud computing contract, political leverage was openly weaponized to suppress journalistic scrutiny.

The book takes readers behind the scenes of major investigative milestones, revealing the rigorous verification, internal debates, and pivotal judgments required to publish truth under fire. It also addresses the complex dilemmas of the digital transformation era, including the fine line between free speech and journalistic responsibility regarding reporters' social media conduct.

An Unfinished Battle for Democracy

Though Baron’s tenure ended in 2021, the book’s core warnings remain urgently relevant as Trump returns to the political forefront. The tension between institutional ownership and newsroom independence flared again ahead of the 2024 U.S. presidential election, when Bezos blocked the paper from publishing an editorial endorsing the Democratic nominee, Kamala Harris—a decision that triggered an immediate backlash, resulting in over 200,000 digital subscription cancellations.

Throughout the memoir, Baron champions a timeless definition of journalistic objectivity: not giving equal weight to every competing claim, but adhering strictly to facts based on evidence, regardless of personal or institutional comfort.

In an era where uncomfortable truths are routinely dismissed as "fake news," Baron’s account serves as both a historical record and a stark reminder. The responsibility of the press to verify facts, hold power accountable, and sustain democracy has never been heavier—or more vulnerable.
