Ansan, South Korea – A protracted legal dispute over a hot spring that has stalled the development of a 80,000 square-meter plot of land in Ansan for decades has finally been resolved, paving the way for urban development projects in the city.

The Supreme Court of Korea ruled in favor of the city of Ansan in a recent administrative lawsuit, effectively ending the long-standing legal battle. The court's decision, reached on November 28th, dismissed an appeal filed by the heirs of the original discoverer of the hot spring, who had contested the city's decision to revoke the hot spring discovery report.

The dispute centered around a hot spring discovered in 1986 in the Shin-gil district, which was designated as a residential area for a national industrial complex. Despite multiple attempts by the discoverer to develop the hot spring, the city consistently denied these requests, citing the area's designation as an industrial complex and the water temperature not meeting the required standards.

After a series of legal battles, the city eventually purchased the land in 1996 with the intention of developing it for residential purposes. However, the ongoing dispute over the hot spring prevented any development from taking place.

Even after the original discoverer's death, the legal battle continued as the heirs claimed their right to the hot spring. The city maintained its position, arguing that the heirs did not meet the requirements to develop the hot spring and that the discovery report had been rightfully revoked.

With the Supreme Court's final ruling, the city of Ansan has now cleared the way for urban development projects in the area. Mayor Lee Min-geun expressed his commitment to moving forward with development plans, stating that the city will work closely with the Ansan Urban Corporation to conduct feasibility studies and develop a comprehensive plan for the area.
