Banana Milk: A Contender for South Korea's Cultural Heritage

Seoul, South Korea – In a surprising move that's captured the nation's attention, Binggrae, a leading South Korean food and beverage company, is seeking to have its iconic Banana Milk container designated as a national cultural heritage. This seemingly ordinary product has become a symbol of the country's consumer culture and is now vying for a place among the nation's most cherished artifacts.   

South Korea's National Heritage Act requires cultural assets to be at least 50 years old and to possess significant historical, cultural, artistic, social, economic, religious, or lifestyle value to be considered for designation. Launched in 1974, Binggrae's Banana Milk easily meets the age requirement. However, the question of whether a mass-produced consumer product can be deemed culturally significant has sparked debate among experts and the public alike.   

While some may question the merits of granting cultural heritage status to a simple milk container, Binggrae argues that the Banana Milk's design holds profound cultural significance. Inspired by the traditional Korean moon jar, the container's distinctive shape and color have become synonymous with the brand and have resonated with consumers for generations. The company contends that the design was carefully crafted to evoke feelings of nostalgia and comfort, reflecting the changing social and economic landscape of South Korea.

"We believe that the Banana Milk container represents more than just a product," said a Binggrae spokesperson. "It's a symbol of Korean culture and a testament to our company's commitment to innovation and design."

Binggrae's efforts to elevate the status of its Banana Milk container come as the South Korean government has expanded the definition of cultural heritage to encompass a wider range of objects and practices. This move has opened the door for items like the Banana Milk container to be considered for designation.
