The Korean Association in Cambodia recently marked its 30th anniversary, bringing together members of the diaspora for a meaningful commemoration of community, resilience, and shared history.
Formed through the voluntary efforts of Korean expatriates even before the official establishment of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Cambodia in 1997, the association holds a unique place in the history of the overseas Korean community. Over the past three decades, it has stood as a steadfast pillar for Koreans living abroad.
The community has weathered numerous hardships, including the COVID-19 pandemic and a decline in Korean tourism. However, through mutual support and solidarity—highlighted by the operation of a dedicated Expatriate Safety Support Unit and community sharing initiatives for vulnerable populations—the association successfully navigated these crises. This resilient spirit of solidarity has enabled the community to rebound to a population of 10,000 this year, reaffirming its vital role as the heart of the diaspora.
As the association celebrates its 30th milestone, it stands at the threshold of a new era. The diaspora's role will be more crucial than ever in expanding and advancing bilateral exchanges across diverse fields, including the economy, education, culture, and science and technology. Furthermore, the community is expected to serve as a reliable bridge in strengthening cooperation between the two governments to ensure the safety and well-being of all overseas Koreans.
In response, the Overseas Koreans Agency is committed to actively listening to the voices of the diaspora, providing unwavering support to foster more dynamic bilateral exchanges, and helping the community take a stable leap forward into the future.
