Incheon Elementary School Teacher Refuses Presidential Medal... "Personal Beliefs"

There are successive cases of people refusing to receive medals from the Yoon Seok-yeol government. Following Professor Kim Cheol-hong of Incheon National University last September, a teacher at an elementary school in Incheon raised his voice criticizing the government by refusing to receive a presidential medal.

The Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education announced on the 30th that Teacher A (61 years old) from an elementary school in Incheon, who is retiring in February next year, declined the Presidential Medal of Merit that he was scheduled to receive at the end of his 33 years of teaching. Teacher A expressed his personal belief, saying, “President Yoon Seok-yeol does not treat the people properly and only repeats the same mistakes, so I do not feel worthy of receiving a medal.”

Previously, last September, Professor Kim Cheol-hong of Incheon National University's Department of Industrial and Management Engineering was selected as a recipient of the Order of Merit for Distinguished Service in recognition of his more than 33 years of experience, but he refused to submit the official report and declined to be awarded the Presidential Medal. Professor Kim criticized this as an act that undermines the meaning of the medal, saying, “I do not want to receive it from a president who does not have the value and qualifications to properly represent the country.”

In addition to this case, the Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education confirmed that one middle school teacher out of 125 teachers who retired last September refused to receive a government award, but was unable to determine the specific reason.

The successive rejection of medals by education workers is interpreted as an expression of dissatisfaction with the education policy of the Yoon Seok-yeol government. In particular, teachers are calling for changes in government policy, complaining about the deteriorating educational environment for students and difficulties in the educational field.

Experts analyze that the refusal of medals by those working in the education field is not simply a personal opinion, but a phenomenon that is a result of accumulated dissatisfaction with the current government. They also point out that this phenomenon suggests that the government should listen to the voices of the educational community and make efforts to improve policies.

As there are successive cases of people refusing to receive medals from the Yoon Seok-yeol government, criticism of the government is growing louder. Education workers' refusal to receive medals is more than just a personal choice; it can be interpreted as a barometer showing dissatisfaction with the current government's education policy. The government should not ignore these signals and make efforts to improve policies by listening to the voices of the educational community.
