Jeonju, South Korea – The Jeonju Sports Complex, a beloved landmark that was built with donations from citizens of North Jeolla Province in 1963, is being demolished to make way for a new MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) complex.

The city of Jeonju held a groundbreaking ceremony on November 25th to mark the beginning of the demolition process. The complex, which had been the heart of sports and community events for over six decades, is being torn down using a hydraulic breaker to minimize noise and dust pollution.

The decision to demolish the complex has been a subject of much debate. While the aging facility had become a safety hazard, many residents expressed nostalgia for the memories associated with the stadium. However, the city government has argued that the new MICE complex will bring significant economic benefits to the region and position Jeonju as an international city.

The demolition is part of a larger urban redevelopment project aimed at transforming the area into a vibrant business and cultural hub. The new MICE complex will include a 10,000 square meter exhibition hall, a convention center capable of accommodating over 2,000 people, and a variety of other facilities such as a hotel, shopping mall, and cultural center.

Mayor Woo Beom-gi expressed his confidence that the new development will revitalize Jeonju's economy and create new jobs. "The Jeonju Sports Complex, which has been the heart of our city both geographically and historically, will now become the driving force behind Jeonju's economy," he said. "We believe that this project will not only revive our local economy but also position Jeonju as a global city."

The demolition of the Jeonju Sports Complex marks the end of an era for the city. However, city officials hope that the new MICE complex will create a brighter future for Jeonju and its residents.
