Donation Ceremony Held at Chwimukheon Calligraphy Museum
Special Exhibition ‘Mun-i Jae-do: Ancient Words Crossing Over’ Unveiled

The Cheonan Cultural Foundation announced on the 30th that it held a donation ceremony for the works of the late master calligrapher Chwimukheon Lee Young-sun at the Chwimukheon Calligraphy Museum.

The bereaved family of Lee Young-sun donated 456 artworks capturing the artistic achievements accumulated over the master’s lifetime, uniting in their intention to contribute to the development of Cheonan’s calligraphy culture.

The ceremony was attended by Cheonan Mayor Chang Ki-soo, the bereaved family, representatives of the Chwimukheon Lee Young-sun Commemorative Association, and officials from Cheonan City and the Cheonan Cultural Foundation. The event featured a progress report on the donation, an introduction to the artworks, welcoming remarks, congratulatory speeches, the presentation of a donation certificate and plaque of appreciation, and a guided tour of the exhibition hall.

Focusing on the donated collection, the foundation will hold a special exhibition titled "Mun-i Jae-do: Ancient Words Crossing Over" until December 20. Through the exhibition, the foundation aims to share the artistic world of Lee Young-sun with citizens, while inheriting and spreading Cheonan's calligraphy culture.

Building upon this donation, the foundation plans to systematically preserve Lee’s artworks and devise various utilization plans so that citizens can enjoy and appreciate them.

Mayor Chang Ki-soo stated, "We expect these donated works to establish themselves as a precious local cultural heritage and serve as a foundation for Cheonan's calligraphy culture to be passed down to the next generation."

Meanwhile, Lee Young-sun opened the "Imuk Seohui" calligraphy studio in Cheonan in the 1970s and continued active artistic pursuits for over 50 years. He built a unique calligraphic world by expressing diverse texts through his art, ranging from ancient scripts like geummun (bronze inscriptions) and classical Chinese literature to Korean classical poetry (gasa) and his own writings.
