Volleyball Empress Kim Yeon-koung Announces Retirement at End of Season

INCHEON, South Korea – Kim Yeon-koung, the iconic star of the Heungkuk Life Pink Spiders women's volleyball team, has announced her retirement from professional volleyball at the end of the 2024-2025 V League season.   

The 37-year-old made the surprise announcement after leading her team to a 3-1 victory over the GS Caltex Seoul KIXX on February 13 at Incheon Samsan World Gymnasium.   

"I have decided to retire after this season," Kim said during the post-game interview. "I've been thinking about it for a while, and I felt that now is the right time."

Kim's announcement comes as a shock to many, as she is still playing at a high level. She is currently ranked sixth in the league in scoring, and she is the top-ranked Korean player. She is also ranked second in attack success rate and first in quick open success rate.

Kim has had a long and illustrious career, spanning over two decades. She has won numerous championships and awards, and she is widely considered to be one of the greatest volleyball players of all time.

"I've been playing volleyball for a long time, and I've achieved a lot," Kim said. "I'm grateful for all the support that I've received from my fans over the years. I'm going to miss playing volleyball, but I'm also excited to start the next chapter of my life."

Kim's retirement will leave a void in the world of volleyball. She is a role model for many young players, and she has inspired millions of people around the world with her passion and dedication to the sport.

"Kim Yeon-koung is a true legend of the game," said Heungkuk Life Pink Spiders head coach Marcello Abbondanza. "She is one of the most talented and hardworking players that I have ever coached. I'm going to miss her leadership and her passion on the court."

Kim's final game will be played at the end of the V League season. It is sure to be a momentous occasion, as fans from all over the world will come to Incheon to say goodbye to one of the greatest volleyball players of all time.
