YEONGJU, GYEONGSANGBUK-DO - Tucked away in the picturesque region of Gyeongsangbuk-do, Museom Village (무섬마을) in Yeongju City offers international travelers a captivating glimpse into Korea's rich cultural past and stunning natural beauty. Often called an "island floating on water," this traditional Hanok village is almost entirely encircled by the serene Naeseongcheon Stream, creating a unique and tranquil atmosphere.

A Village Surrounded by Water

The village’s name, Museom, literally means "water island," a fitting description for its remarkable location. The Naeseongcheon Stream flows around the village on three sides, protecting it from the outside world for centuries and helping to preserve its collection of over 40 well-maintained traditional Korean houses. These homes, designated as National Folklore Cultural Heritage, showcase various architectural styles, including the imposing residences of the aristocratic yangban class, such as the Haeudang House and Manjukjae House.

The most famous feature is the Single-Log Bridge, a narrow, historic wooden structure that was, until the 1970s, the only link between the village and the mainland. Crossing this picturesque bridge is a must-do experience, offering breathtaking views and a memorable photo opportunity, especially during the annual Museom Single-Log Bridge Festival.

Plan Your Visit: Getting There

Museom Village is located in a beautifully preserved rural area, and while it is easily accessible, a little planning will ensure a smooth trip.

Inquiries: 1330 Korea Travel Hotline (English, Japanese, Chinese, etc.) or +82-54-638-1127.

Nearby Attractions

Your visit to Museom Village can easily be extended to include other cultural and historical treasures in the Yeongju area:

Buseoksa Temple (부석사): A UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Korea's most important and beautiful Buddhist temples, famous for its Muryangsujeon Hall and stunning mountain views.
Sosu Seowon Confucian Academy (소수서원): Korea’s first private Confucian academy, offering a deep look into the intellectual and scholarly traditions of the Joseon Dynasty.
Seonbi Village (선비촌): A recreated village dedicated to the Seonbi, or virtuous scholars, allowing visitors to experience the traditional culture and lifestyle of the Joseon era.
Museom Village is a treasure trove of history, architecture, and natural beauty. It’s an ideal destination for travelers looking to escape the city and immerse themselves in the quiet elegance of old Korea. Don't miss this tranquil island of tradition on your next trip!
