JAKARTA — The death toll from the powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck off the northern coast of Flores Island in eastern Indonesia has risen to 47, disaster management officials announced on Sunday.
According to updates provided by the Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), search and rescue teams working through the rubble have recovered additional bodies across the hardest-hit regions of Sikka, Manggarai, and East Manggarai on Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara province. In addition to the fatalities, at least 50 individuals sustained severe-to-moderate injuries and have been rushed to local hospitals for emergency medical treatment.
Widespread Destruction and Structural Damage
The shallow earthquake, which struck at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) early Saturday morning, triggered widespread panic and catastrophic structural collapses. BNPB reports indicate that 157 houses were completely flattened, while an additional 189 homes suffered varying degrees of structural damage.
The disaster has severely impacted critical community infrastructure. Public records show that:
87 educational facilities (schools and local learning centers) have been damaged.
18 healthcare facilities (including local clinics and hospital wings) are impaired.
6 government offices along with nearly 100 other public buildings have suffered significant structural compromises.
The compounding devastation forced roughly 2,000 displaced residents to flee their homes and seek safety in temporary evacuation shelters set up on higher ground.
Relentless Aftershocks Hamper Recovery
Indonesian meteorological authorities reported that the devastating initial tremor has been followed by at least 235 aftershocks. The most powerful among these subsequent tremors registered at a magnitude of 6.2, further terrifying local populations and complicating ongoing rescue operations.
Search efforts have faced severe logistical hurdles. Power outages, downed telecommunication networks, and roads blocked by earthquake-triggered landslides have severely delayed emergency response times in remote mountainous settlements.
