A Somali Traveler's Smile

The young man from Somalia who visited Cherry Garden in Haeundae today enjoyed eating chicken bulgogi. His expression looked bright and innocent. Whenever I see people from Somalia, there is one thing that surprises me: they are extraordinarily beautiful. Among world-class models, there are many Somali young women. Somali women living in advanced countries after leaving their homeland have outstanding beauty that can be recognized at a glance. The men are also good-looking. I often guess that the reason for this might be due to the mix of Middle Eastern, European, and East African heritage. People from Somalia always smile brightly. Somalia is famous as a country where actress Kim Hye-ja or Audrey Hepburn conducted emergency relief activities, and is known for having the longest coastline among the 55 African nations. It is also called the "Horn of Africa." Because of its vital geopolitical location, trade flourished there, and it is a historically fascinating nation in human history. In that country, livestock farming is so well-developed that camels represent social status and are a symbol of wealth. During the Somali Civil War, the sight of starving people with emaciated faces covered in flies remains a shocking memory. Many of the people who left Somalia back then now travel from advanced countries to South Korea. Whenever I see them, I feel many things.
