GWANGJU — Koryoin Village in Wolgok-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju—the largest settlement area for ethnic Koreans from the former Soviet Union (Koryoins) in South Korea—announced on October 8 that it will host the "14th Koryoin Day Anniversary Event" to share history and culture with local residents.
Scheduled for October 17–18 at Hong Beom-do Park (Damoa Children's Park) in Wolgok-dong, the event is designed to honor the history of Koryoin ancestors, promote community harmony, and foster coexistence with the local society.
The official ceremony on October 18 will feature awards presented to individuals and organizations that have contributed to the stable settlement, welfare, and prestige of Koryoins. Recipients will receive honors such as the Gwangju Mayor’s Award, Gwangsan District Mayor’s Award, National Assembly Member’s Award, and letters of appreciation, alongside scholarship grants for Koryoin children.
Following the ceremony, celebratory performances, a resident talent show, and a lucky draw event will take place.
Starting on the morning of October 17, the "Koryoin Village Cultural Market" will feature around 10 booths offering Central Asian food and cultural experiences. Throughout the festival period, Koryoin Village tour guides will offer village exploration tours for visitors.
Additional programs include traditional food sharing prepared by village residents, Central Asian traditional costume-making experiences, and cultural busking, allowing citizens to directly experience Koryoin lifestyles and Central Asian culture.
The event is sponsored by the Gwangju Metropolitan Government, Gwangsan District Office, and the Overseas Koreans Agency.
Shin Cho-ya, representative of Koryoin Village, stated, "This event goes beyond just a commemorative gathering for Koryoin compatriots; it aims to be a representative migrant community harmony festival where established and immigrant residents can understand each other and share affection through food, culture, and performances." She added, "It will also be an opportunity to express our gratitude to the local community that has stood by us as our village took root."
