YEONGDEOK, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea – For travelers seeking an authentic taste of coastal Korea, look no further than Ganggu Port (강구항) in Yeongdeok County. As one of the largest fishing ports on the East Sea, Ganggu is a vibrant hub famous worldwide for its top-tier specialty: the Yeongdeok Snow Crab (Yeongdeok Daegae). This bustling port, often called the "Snow Crab Mecca," offers a mix of picturesque scenery, maritime culture, and, most importantly, an unforgettable culinary experience.

The Culinary Crown Jewel: Snow Crab Street

The port's main artery is affectionately known as "Snow Crab Street," where over a hundred restaurants line the road, each showcasing tanks brimming with the prized crustaceans. The peak season runs from November to May, a period when foodies flock from all corners to savor the sweet, delicate meat of the snow crab. Look for the massive, colorful snow crab sculptures—they serve as whimsical landmarks and perfect photo opportunities!

Essential Travel Information for Foreign Visitors

Address: 253-51, Ganggu-ri, Ganggu-myeon, Yeongdeok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea (경상북도 영덕군 강구면 강구리 253-51)

Getting There:

By Intercity Bus (Recommended from Seoul): Take an intercity bus from Dong Seoul Bus Terminal directly to Yeongdeok Bus Terminal. The journey takes approximately 4 hours. From Yeongdeok Terminal, take a local bus (such as the Yeongdeok-Jangsa route) or a taxi to Ganggu Intercity Bus Terminal or Ganggu Port itself.
By KTX Train + Bus: Take the KTX high-speed train to Donghae Station or Pohang Station. From either station, you must transfer to an intercity or local bus bound for Yeongdeok. A taxi from Pohang to Ganggu Port takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
By Car: Ganggu Port is easily accessible via the scenic National Route 7, making it a popular destination for a coastal driving trip.

Nearby Attractions: Beyond the Crab Feast

While the snow crab is the star, Ganggu Port is surrounded by beautiful coastal spots perfect for a post-meal stroll or day trip:

Haeparang Park: Located near the port, this expansive ocean-view park is ideal for a relaxing walk. It often features impressive sculptures, including a large, colorful snow crab statue, and is a key venue for the annual Yeongdeok Snow Crab Festival (typically held around late February/early March).
Jukdosan (Bamboo Island Mountain) Observatory: Climb a short distance for panoramic views of Ganggu Port and the East Sea, offering a breathtaking perspective of the coastline.
Samsa Marine Park: Situated just south of Ganggu Port, this park offers a magnificent bird's-eye view of the East Coast and is a popular spot for watching the sunrise, especially during the New Year. It also features various recreational facilities.
Ganggu Port promises not just a meal, but an immersion into the lively atmosphere of a traditional Korean fishing village, where the spirit of the sea and the delight of its famous delicacy blend perfectly. Don't miss this essential East Coast destination!
