Singapore and Malaysia are taking a significant step towards bolstering their green energy partnership with the development of a 1-gigawatt (GW) subsea power grid connection. This ambitious project aims to facilitate the transmission of renewable energy from Sarawak, Malaysia, to Singapore, contributing to the region's sustainable energy transition.

Sembcorp Utilities, a subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries, and Sarawak Energy Services, a subsidiary of Sarawak Energy Berhad, have formalized their collaboration through an agreement focused on the subsea power grid connection. This partnership will leverage the expertise of technology partner SP Power Interconnect and Italian cable manufacturing giant Prysmian.

The involved parties will work exclusively with Prysmian to optimize the design, installation methodologies, and protection measures for the subsea power cables. This collaborative effort is crucial for ensuring the efficient and reliable transfer of approximately 1GW of green energy from Sarawak's renewable resources to Singapore.

The project's development will navigate through a series of regulatory approvals, highlighting the commitment of both nations to adhering to stringent standards. Sembcorp has indicated that the agreement is not expected to have a material impact on its financial performance for the 2025 fiscal year.

Prysmian's recent activities underscore its leading role in subsea cable technology. The company has commenced installation operations for a subsea power grid connection linking Sicily, Sardinia, and mainland Italy, and has further strengthened its capabilities with the addition of the advanced cable installation vessel "Mona Lisa."

This Singapore-Malaysia subsea power grid project signifies a deepening of energy cooperation between the two nations and is poised to play a vital role in accelerating the adoption of clean energy solutions across Southeast Asia.
