The online trading of airline miles, while not strictly illegal, treads a fine line, often violating the terms and conditions set by airlines. Singapore Airlines, for example, maintains a strict policy against the sale or exchange of its "KrisFlyer" miles. Violators risk having their miles confiscated and their accounts terminated. However, online marketplaces like Carousell, while prohibiting the sale of weapons and cryptocurrencies, do not explicitly ban mileage trading. A Carousell spokesperson stated, "The management of airline miles and points sales aligns with the airline's terms and conditions, and Carousell is not in a position to know or enforce third-party contracts."

Online mileage transactions typically occur through two primary methods. The first involves the direct transfer of credit card points into the buyer's KrisFlyer account. The second method entails registering the buyer as a "nominee" within the KrisFlyer program, allowing them to utilize the miles.

Mileage sellers offer various motivations for their actions. Some may possess an excess of miles beyond their usage capacity, while others seek to avoid the expiration of their accumulated miles. Additionally, individuals may sell miles to raise funds for purchasing more affordable airline tickets.

However, online mileage trading is not without its perils. Consumers face the risk of having their miles confiscated and accounts suspended if detected by the airline. Furthermore, the potential for online fraud looms, posing a significant threat to unsuspecting buyers.

Fortunately, legitimate avenues for mileage accrual exist. Services like Citi PayAll and CardUp enable users to earn miles by paying bills, rent, and education expenses.

The convenience of online mileage trading is undeniable, yet it is accompanied by inherent risks. Consumers are advised to exercise caution and prioritize legitimate methods for earning and utilizing airline miles.
