Asunción, Paraguay – The Paraguayan Chamber of Maquila Industries (CEMAP) is set to commemorate its 25th anniversary with a special event at the Central Bank of Paraguay on April 29th. CEMAP President Karina Daher announced that the celebration will reflect on the industry's significant achievements over the past quarter-century and outline its future development strategies.

The maquila sector has become a cornerstone of Paraguay's economy, demonstrating remarkable growth. According to data from the Central Bank of Paraguay, the sector surged by 35% year-over-year in January alone. Currently, approximately 310 maquila industries operate in the country, with a strong focus on automotive parts manufacturing. These industries directly employ around 31,000 people and generate numerous indirect jobs in logistics, services, and commerce.

In an interview with GEN Channel, Daher highlighted the industry's successful diversification of its export markets. While Brazil remains a primary destination, Paraguay has significantly expanded its reach to Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, the United States, Europe, and various Asian countries.

The maquila industry's steady growth is attributed to a robust legal framework. However, Daher emphasized that infrastructure improvements are crucial for sustained expansion. "We need more bridges, better roads, and enhanced connectivity to improve export efficiency and reduce costs," she stated.

Notably, the maquila sector boasts a high rate of female employment, providing substantial job opportunities for vulnerable women and female heads of households, particularly in border regions like Alto Paraná.

The 25th-anniversary event at the Central Bank will feature keynote speeches and serve as a platform to reaffirm the industry's commitment to economic growth and attracting foreign investment.

Daher praised the current government's strong support for the maquila industry and its proactive efforts to promote it internationally. "Paraguay is a diamond in the rough with immense investment potential, and we are dedicated to showcasing that potential to the world," she added.
