SEONGNAM, South Korea — Kakao Corp. has officially finalized its 2026 wage agreement, bringing a resolution to months of sharp labor-management confrontation that previously led to the first partial strike in the company's history. Union members ratified the tentative accord on Friday afternoon following a company-wide vote, paving the way for normalized workplace operations.

Under the newly approved settlement, Kakao will allocate a 6.3% increase in total annual salary budget resources and distribute a special encouragement bonus of 3 million KRW (approximately $2,200) to eligible employees. Financial resources for career "stage-up" salary progression will be managed and applied separately from the primary wage pool, providing additional structural support for employee career advancement.

The finalization of the contract puts an end to an intense conflict that began earlier this year when management and the labor union clashed over base salary adjustment rates and performance bonus calculation methodologies. Tension steadily escalated through spring, leading to formal mediation at the Gyeonggi Regional Labor Relations Commission on May 18, which ultimately concluded without an agreement.

The impasse reached a climax on June 10, when Kakao workers launched a landmark four-hour partial strike—the first industrial action taken since the founding of the South Korean tech conglomerate. The strike extended beyond Kakao’s parent company to include workers from five key subsidiaries, such as Kakao Pay and Kakao Enterprise. Striking employees staged demonstrations in front of Kakao’s headquarters, Pangyo Agit in Seongnam, holding placards and chanting slogans demanding transparent corporate governance and fair compensation structures.

Following extended bargaining sessions and ongoing dispute resolution efforts throughout July, leadership from both sides forged a provisional wage proposal on July 29. Friday's successful ratification vote officially puts an end to the dispute, establishing a baseline for industrial peace moving forward.

Reflecting on the resolution, a Kakao corporate spokesperson stated, "We plan to faithfully execute all terms established during these negotiations. Moving forward, the company will work together with all team members to foster a sustainable growth environment and construct a workplace culture that enables employees to dedicate themselves fully to their responsibilities."
