Emergency services responded immediately, deploying 10 helicopters, 40 ambulances, and a team of 150 rescue workers to the scene. While Swiss police have yet to release an official final death toll, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported receiving preliminary information from Swiss authorities indicating at least 40 fatalities.
The number of victims is expected to rise as many of the injured remain in critical condition.
