CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland – A devastating explosion and subsequent fire tore through a crowded bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana in the early hours of New Year’s Day, leaving at least 40 people dead and approximately 100 others injured.

Incident Overview
The blast occurred at approximately 1:30 AM on January 1, 2026, as revelers gathered to celebrate the start of the New Year. The venue, located in the Valais canton, was packed with over 100 patrons at the time of the incident. Emergency services responded immediately, deploying 10 helicopters, 40 ambulances, and a team of 150 rescue workers to the scene. Authorities have since cordoned off the area and established a no-fly zone over the resort.

Casualties and Medical Response
While Swiss police have yet to release an official final death toll, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported receiving preliminary information from Swiss authorities indicating at least 40 fatalities.

The number of victims is expected to rise as many of the injured remain in critical condition. Mathias Reynard, President of the Valais State Council, informed local media that intensive care units and operating rooms at Valais hospitals have reached full capacity, necessitating the transfer of victims to neighboring medical facilities. Most survivors are being treated for severe burns.

Investigation into the Cause
The Valais Prosecutor’s Office has launched a formal investigation. Attorney General Beatrice Pilloud stated that current evidence points toward an accidental fire rather than a deliberate attack.

"At this stage, the possibility of a terrorist attack is completely ruled out," Pilloud remarked, adding that further details would be withheld out of respect for the victims' families.
Local media outlet 24 Heures suggested that the fire may have been triggered by the use of pyrotechnics or indoor fireworks during a concert held at the bar.

Regional Impact
Crans-Montana is a world-renowned alpine destination, situated approximately 40 kilometers north of the Matterhorn. The tragedy comes at a significant time for the region, which is scheduled to host the 2027 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships. Furthermore, the resort was preparing to welcome athletes for downhill training sessions ahead of the Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo Winter Olympics, set to begin next month.

Other New Year’s Incidents
The disaster in Switzerland was part of a series of tragic events marking the start of 2026. In Bielefeld, Germany, two 18-year-old men were killed in a mishap involving homemade fireworks. Meanwhile, in Australia, a stabbing incident on New Year’s Eve left two young men hospitalized with serious injuries.
