Lima, Peru – On March 8th, Peru joins the global community in commemorating International Women's Day, recognizing the significant presence and contributions of its 17.163 million female citizens. According to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), women constitute 50.4% of Peru's population, slightly outnumbering men who represent 49.6%.

Demographics and Aging Population

The demographic breakdown reveals a diverse female population:

4.37 million (23.3%) are under the age of 15.
8.87 million (51.7%) are between 15 and 49 years old.
1.79 million (10.4%) are aged 50 to 59.
2.49 million (14.5%) are 60 years or older.
Notably, the average age of Peruvian women has risen to 34, reflecting an aging population trend. This is a six-year increase compared to two decades ago when the average age was 28.

Historical Context and Upcoming Census

Historically, the number of women in Peru has generally exceeded that of men, with the exception of the 1972 census during Juan Velasco Alvarado's dictatorship. The INEI will conduct the National Census 2025 between August and October to update official population figures. This census will utilize digital data collection methods, with census takers using tablets to input information in real-time.

The Pervasive Issue of Violence

Despite progress, violence against women remains a critical concern. The INEI's 2024 study on the Peruvian population revealed that 53.8% of women reported experiencing abuse from their husbands or partners in the past year. This includes:

49.3% experiencing psychological violence.
27.2% experiencing physical violence.
6.5% experiencing sexual violence.
The study also highlighted disparities based on ethnicity and language:

Psychological violence is more prevalent among women of white ethnicity (55.7%).
Physical and sexual violence is higher among women who identify as native (31.9% and 8.6%, respectively).
Women who speak native languages also experience higher rates of violence.

Initiatives and Celebrations

In recognition of International Women's Day, initiatives are underway to empower women. Opportunities such as comprehensive scholarships for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields are being offered. Also cultural events are being held, such as free entry to the “Parque de las Leyendas” Zoo.

Census 2025: Modernization and Extended Data Collection

The upcoming National Census 2025 marks a significant shift in data collection methodology. The INEI, led by Dr. Gaspar Morán Flores, will extend the census period to three months to ensure comprehensive coverage of Peru's 34.4 million residents. The use of digital tablets will streamline data entry and enhance accuracy.

Call to Action

As Peru celebrates International Women's Day, there is a renewed call to address the persistent issue of violence against women and to promote gender equality across all sectors of society.
