Lisa Su, Chair and CEO of AMD, is holding consecutive high-profile meetings with Jeon Young-hyun, Vice Chairman of Samsung Electronics, and Kwak Noh-jung, President of SK Hynix. Industry watchers interpret these moves as a strategic effort to strengthen partnerships for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), a core component facing surging demand due to the artificial intelligence (AI) boom.
According to industry sources on the 7th, CEO Su met with Vice Chairman Jeon and other top Samsung executives at the Samsung Electronics Seocho building in Seocho-gu, Seoul, this afternoon. During her previous visit to South Korea in March, she toured the Pyeongtaek production line with Vice Chairman Jeon and attended a dinner meeting with Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong.
Visiting Korea again after about seven months, CEO Su is expected to discuss expanding cooperation in AI semiconductors with Vice Chairman Jeon, who leads Samsung's semiconductor business. Samsung Electronics has been supplying HBM3E for AMD's AI accelerators and has also been designated as the primary supplier of HBM4 for AMD's next-generation AI accelerator, the Instinct MI455X.
Attention is also focused on whether cooperation will expand beyond memory into the foundry sector. When signing a business agreement in March, Samsung Electronics and AMD agreed to discuss contract manufacturing partnerships for AMD's next-generation products. Observers are watching closely to see if these discussions progress during this meeting.
Before meeting with Samsung, CEO Su reportedly met with SK Hynix President and CEO Kwak Noh-jung. Industry insiders believe the two sides discussed ways to expand cooperation, including the supply of high-performance memory such as HBM.
Meanwhile, on her first day in Korea, CEO Su attended a business roundtable hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT at the Four Seasons Hotel in Jongno-gu, Seoul, alongside domestic AI semiconductor companies to discuss cooperative measures. Later that afternoon at 2:00 PM, she participated in the AMD Gamer Day event held at Seoul Dragon City in Yongsan-gu.
