Chungnam Governor Park Soo-hyun attended the 15th Memorial Cultural Festival for Emperor Gojong and Empress Myeongseong, held on the 11th at the Jungakdan altar of Sinwonsa Temple in Gongju.
Hosted by Sinwonsa Temple, the event was attended by some 200 people, including Governor Park and Provincial Council Chairman Cho Chul-ki, and proceeded with a rite for wandering souls, a memorial Buddhist service, and cultural performances.
In his memorial address at the event, Governor Park stated, "Sinwonsa Temple's Jungakdan is a place where prayers were offered for the peace and well-being of the state and the royal court during the Joseon Dynasty, as well as for the peace and abundance of the common people. The pain of Empress Myeongseong, who had to end her life in the most tragic way, and the agony of Emperor Gojong, who struggled amidst the fierce rivalry of imperialist powers, still breathe within the trees of the Jungakdan courtyard."
He added, "History is a mirror reflecting the past, a compass that helps us view the present correctly and prepares us for the future. Chungcheongnam-do will realize the aspiration for national security and public well-being based on the Chungcheong spirit of loyalty, filial piety, and propriety."
