Ahead of its governmental proposal regarding the attraction of the integrated power corporation headquarters, Chungcheongnam-do held a session to final-check its established strategies, including refining the logic for why the province is the optimal location.
On the 8th, the province hosted the "2nd Task Force (TF) Meeting for Attracting the Integrated Headquarters of Public Power Generation Companies" at the intermediate conference room of the provincial government office, chaired by Administrative Vice Governor Hong Jong-wan, who heads the TF.
During the meeting, participants shared the trends of the government and the National Assembly following the government's announcement last September regarding the integration plan of the five major power generation companies, and reviewed progress across five sectors: logic development, trend analysis, external cooperation, city-county cooperation, and policy consultation.
The core agenda of the day was an interim report on the "Strategy for Attracting the Integrated Headquarters of Public Power Generation Companies" study currently being conducted by the Chungnam Institute.
This study focused on shifting the "hosting logic" from a regional perspective centered simply on compensation for damages to a "national strategy" centered on public enterprise and national demand.
The institute presented objective rationales, which include: contributing to the expansion of national renewable energy by utilizing existing power infrastructure along the west coast of Chungnam and the nation's largest coal-fired thermal power assets as transitional assets; alleviating additional power generation and transmission burdens on the Honam region during the transitional energy transition process; and stably supplying electricity to high-power-consuming high-tech industries in the Chungcheong and metropolitan areas.
Based on the interim study results, the province plans to gather opinions from TF experts and departmental sectors, and reflect them to finalize the ultimate hosting strategy.
The finalized research results will be utilized as data to propose the justification for hosting in Chungnam to the government, the National Assembly, and the Presidential Office, and will be presented at a National Assembly policy forum scheduled for November to promote public discussion.
Administrative Vice Governor Hong Jong-wan emphasized, "Chungnam is the nation's largest energy transition site—where 28 out of 52 coal-fired power plants are concentrated—and the frontline of national energy security. We will persuade the government and the National Assembly so that the justification for hosting in Chungnam translates into a national strategy that resonates everywhere in the Republic of Korea."
