In a strategic move to secure foreign investment and build international cooperation networks in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Chungnam Governor Park Soo-hyun met with representatives of major South Korean corporations and institutions operating in Europe and Germany. The meeting served as a crucial platform to assess current economic and industrial trends while exploring robust support and cooperation strategies for local enterprises.
On-the-Ground Dialogue with Global Business Leaders
On August 24 (local time), Governor Park held a high-level roundtable discussion at the Steigenberger Hotel in Frankfurt, Germany. Key participants included regional executives, managing directors, and branch heads from major entities such as Hanwha TotalEnergies, Ceragem, Atomy, Kwangjin Machinery, and the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA). The meeting was also attended by key provincial legislative figures, including Chungnam Provincial Assembly Chairman Cho Chul-ki and Education Committee Chairperson Kim Eun-na.
During his opening remarks, Governor Park expressed profound gratitude to the business leaders, stating, "It is deeply meaningful to meet with dedicated corporate leaders in Frankfurt who are pouring their utmost efforts into advancing the economies of both South Korea and Chungnam Province. I commend and encourage everyone for working on the frontlines with heavy responsibilities and creativity to secure global competitiveness."
Navigating the AI Great Transformation and Three Core Balances
Transitioning to broader economic visions, Governor Park addressed the monumental shifts brought by modern technology. "Artificial intelligence represents a civilizational great transformation comparable to or exceeding the discovery of fire by humankind," he noted. To successfully navigate this era, he introduced the framework of "Three Core Balances under the AI Great Transformation":
Balance between industry and human workers to ensure sustainable workforce integration.
Balance between cutting-edge high-tech industries and traditional industries across regional ecosystems.
Balance between large conglomerates and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) for balanced market growth.
Governor Park emphasized that even small units of collaborative effort and mutual understanding among government and corporate entities can generate powerful synergies comparable to central government support, creating an optimal business environment.
Addressing Corporate Challenges and Practical Field Requests
During the open-floor discussion, business executives voiced critical hurdles they face in the European theater, including:
Escalating compliance and operational costs driven by stringent European regulatory frameworks.
Intensified market competition stemming from aggressive expansions by Chinese enterprises.
Inflated general operational expenses triggered by geopolitical conflicts such as the wars in Ukraine and Iran.
Persistent global economic stagnation and inflation.
In response, corporate representatives put forward several pragmatic requests to the provincial government, such as incubation support (affordable office rentals and localized corporate establishment assistance), youth internship dispatch programs, administrative cooperation for constructing accommodation facilities within Gongju, direct shipping routes linking Daesan Port directly to Europe, and fair, non-discriminatory support structures for large enterprises.
Governor Park responded actively to each concern. Addressing aggressive market encroachment by Chinese competitors, he pledged to formally petition the central government for systemic national countermeasures. Regarding the youth internship dispatch program, he welcomed the proposal as a vital initiative and promised immediate review. On concerns regarding the European Union Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), he committed the provincial government to intensifying intelligence-gathering and policy-sharing operations to minimize trial and error for overseas-expanding enterprises.
Furthermore, regarding the request for accommodation development in Gongju, he instructed the Director-General of Economic and Trade Affairs to accelerate discussions with Gongju City officials. For the direct maritime route between Daesan Port and Europe, he promised to formally request action from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and other relevant ministries.
Strengthening Chungnam's Global Leadership and Inclusive Vision
In his concluding remarks, Governor Park acknowledged the difficult local operating environment marked by global supply chain realignment, logistical barriers, and severe talent acquisition challenges in Europe. Nevertheless, he paid high tribute to the resilience and accomplishments of local pioneers: Hanwha's eco-friendly materials competitiveness, Kwangjin Machinery's technological prowess, Ceragem's Korean-style healthcare value, and Atomy's distribution innovations.
Highlighting regional economic standing, Governor Park noted, "Chungnam leads South Korea's economy, ranking second nationwide in exports and first in trade surplus, anchored by advanced manufacturing sectors such as semiconductors. Leveraging these core competencies, we are actively supporting the global expansion of regional small and medium-sized enterprises through seven overseas offices, including our dedicated German office." He called for ongoing cooperation and solidarity, noting that the hard-earned wisdom and advice of senior enterprises already established abroad will serve as a powerful catalyst for incoming challengers.
"The 9th popularly elected local government aims for inclusive provincial administration where corporate growth directly translates into the happiness of our residents," Governor Park concluded. "We will concentrate all our capabilities to ensure that Chungnam solidifies its position as the undisputed capital of AI and the second metropolitan center, fostering a thriving ecosystem where industries and people naturally converge."
